Hailey Bieber helped make “brownie lips” a viral name in 2022, but she did not invent the brown-liner-and-gloss look. Published accounts trace earlier versions to Black women and to Latina communities, including Mexican American chola style. Those histories are related through the makeup technique, but they are not a single, definitively documented origin story.
Did Hailey Bieber start brownie lips?
No. Bieber’s role was helping popularize the label and bring the look to a new wave of attention. In a September 2022 report, People en Español described her TikTok using a rich brown Scott Barnes lip liner in Naomi with Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment. The article said the video had received more than 11 million views at the time it was published; that is a 2022 snapshot, not a current count.
The technique itself predates the viral label. Dia de Beauté put the distinction plainly: Bieber popularized the new nomenclature, not the makeup approach. Brown liner paired with a lighter lip color or gloss had already been worn for decades.
What is the history of brown lip liner and gloss?
The accounts that discuss the look point to more than one community and period. They should be read as attributed histories of related styles, not proof that one person or group first used the technique.

Latina and Mexican American histories
People en Español reported in 2022 that brown lip liner had been popular among Latinas for decades and identified women in Mexican American chola subculture among its early adopters. That account places the technique in a specific cultural context rather than treating the viral trend name as its beginning.
Black women and mid-century styling
Dia de Beauté’s 2023 account traces darkly outlined lips to Black women in the 1940s and 1950s. The publication also described 1990s R&B and hip-hop artists as helping bring related ombré lips to a wider audience. Its account is one published interpretation of the history, not an archival finding establishing a single inventor.

Why the 1990s matter to the story
Dia de Beauté quoted makeup artist Carol Romero describing how styles used in “the ghettos” reached media with the rise of R&B. The point is that visibility in mainstream entertainment came after the look was already present in communities; wider exposure should not be mistaken for invention.
Why did the 2022 name prompt debate?
The criticism was about credit as well as the unequal way the same look can be received on different people. In an October 4, 2022 report, The Independent reported celebrity makeup artist Sir John Barnett’s comments on the contrast. “When it was on my sisters or my mom, and in Black and Latino communities, it was seen as ghetto. Now that it’s on white bodies, it’s seen as ‘fashionable’.”

Barnett also connected the look to limited product choices for Black and brown consumers: “We had to be creative and try things in an unorthodox way because of the lack of products for Black and brown people.” He recalled, “All you had was a lip liner and a clear gloss back in the day.” His remarks explain why naming a viral version without acknowledging earlier wearers can feel like erasure, even when a new label brings fresh attention.
How to recreate the look
The basic combination is a brown lip liner softened toward the center, topped with clear or sheer gloss, lip treatment, or a lighter nude lipstick. In Dia de Beauté, makeup artist Carol Romero’s advice was to choose a liner darker than the lip color to create contrast. There is no single required shade, finish, or product.

- Outline and fill the lips with a brown liner, adjusting the shade depth and undertone to the contrast you want.
- Soften the line inward toward the center so the transition is blended rather than sharply divided.

Yes, as a reported fashion direction rather than a live popularity measure. In an October 6, 2025 article, El País described more translucent, glossy brown lips returning in 2025/26 collections. That supports a later fashion revival report; it does not establish how popular the style is now.
