They describe the show as an adaptation of the books and confirm Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, but they do not announce an earlier Voldemort appearance or identify an actor playing him.

The same announcement confirms Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Harry’s Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in his first year. It also names John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Nick Frost as Hagrid and Paul Whitehouse as Filch. Quirrell’s casting establishes that the first-year professor is part of the series; it does not, by itself, establish a change to when Voldemort becomes involved.
Does Quirrell’s casting mean Voldemort will appear earlier?
No such conclusion follows from the casting announcement. Quirrell is a character from the first book, but the official material cited above does not say that the series will bring Voldemort into the story earlier than the books do. The claim in the title is therefore not supported by these announcements.
#1 Best Overall
Gardiner and Mylod described the adaptation’s scope in a Wizarding World report published December 5, 2024: “We have 8 hours to tell the first book.” That is a statement about the first book’s adaptation, not confirmation of an altered Voldemort storyline. Read the official interview report.
Has HBO announced who will play Voldemort?
The official sources cited here do not name a Voldemort actor. GamesRadar reported that actor Paul Bettany denied rumors that he had been cast, saying, “I’ve heard nothing about that through any official channels at all. No, that’s just a rumor.” GamesRadar also said at the time of publication that Voldemort casting had not been revealed. This is a time-qualified report about a rumor, not an official casting announcement. Read GamesRadar’s report.

Production and release information
A later Wizarding World update said production had commenced and gave the series a 2027 debut window on HBO and HBO Max where available; it did not provide an exact premiere date. The series is identified as streaming on HBO Max, with availability dependent on territory. Read the production update and the related cast update.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unconfirmed
Within the official announcements cited here, there is no confirmation that Voldemort will appear earlier than in the source story and no named actor for the role. That describes the scope of these sources; it is not a claim that no announcement exists elsewhere. Until an official statement establishes a change, earlier involvement should be treated as speculation rather than confirmed news.
