Yes—Bengal has enduring railway ghost stories, but they are best understood as folklore and literature, not verified paranormal events. The Begunkodar station legend is the best-known example; fiction by Satyajit Ray and other Bengali writers shows how trains, stations and compartments became settings for doubles, pranks and phantom journeys.
What is the story of Begunkodar railway station?
A widely circulated legend places the haunting of Begunkodar in 1967. As recounted by Arup K. Chatterjee in a 2018 Scroll feature, a woman in white appeared at the station; the stationmaster reportedly died of fright, staff left, and trains did not officially stop there for a prolonged period.
Those details belong to the reported legend. The Scroll account is not primary railway documentation, and the available evidence here does not independently substantiate the apparition, the reported cause of death, or the station’s full service history. Begunkodar is therefore a famous haunted-station story, not a verified haunting. Calling it “India’s only ghost station” would also overstate the evidence: that phrase is a characterization in the feature, not a formal railway classification.
What is the Chandernagore railway ghost story?
The same Scroll feature describes a reported local story about a mysterious signal light at Chandernagore and a dead guard. It is another piece of railway folklore, not evidence that the light was paranormal or that a ghost was present.

How railway ghosts work in Bengali fiction
Railway stories offer writers more than a spooky backdrop. A train confines strangers together, carries a traveller into unfamiliar places, and can make an ordinary encounter feel unstable. In the examples discussed by Scroll, the railway setting serves different purposes: a double can unsettle identity, a compartment can stage a prank, and an unexplained train can turn a journey into a supernatural puzzle. Colonial memory is one interpretive thread in this literature, not a single explanation for every story.
Satyajit Ray: a ghostly double on the way to Raghunathpur
In Anath Babur Bhoy (1962), a narrator travelling by train to Raghunathpur meets Anath Bandhu Mitra, a figure associated with ghostly doubles who later becomes a ghost. The journey makes the meeting feel like an intrusion into everyday travel rather than an encounter in a remote haunted house.

Satyajit Ray: the supposed colonial ghost in a first-class compartment
First Class Kamra (1981) places a supposed encounter with Major Davenport, a colonial-era ghost, inside a first-class railway compartment. In the ending summarized by Scroll, the apparition is revealed as a theatrical prank. The story uses the machinery of a ghost tale to expose pomposity and nostalgia as well as to create suspense.
Satyajit Ray: trainspotting and a double
In Ratan Babu aar sei Lokta (“Ratan Babu and that Man”), trainspotting frames a doppelganger story. Scroll describes a man who mirrors Ratan Babu and a fatal conclusion beside the railway. Here the railway is not merely a route to the uncanny; it is part of the story’s fascination with watching, recognition and repetition.

Syed Mustafa Siraj: the uncertain station of Ghum Ghumi
Stationer Naam Ghum Ghumi (“Station, Ghum Ghumi”) unfolds in a remote fictional setting where the narrator is warned that people and things seen there may not exist. Scroll suggests that the name may be associated with Ghum station near Darjeeling; that is an interpretation, not a confirmed statement by the author.
Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay and the phantom train
Scroll also points to Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay’s Gondhota Khub Shondehojonok (“That Suspicious Scent”) and to a phantom goods-train episode in another story. These examples widen the literary map beyond a single famous station legend. Exact spellings, transliterations and translated titles can vary by edition.

What historical records can—and cannot—show
There is a documentary record of Bengali ghost-story publishing, though it does not verify the events the stories describe. The British Library’s Endangered Archives Programme catalogues a collection of popular-market Bengali books held by Jadavpur University’s School of Cultural Texts and Records, broadly dated circa 1870 to 2005. One digitized item is identified as bhaẏānak bhūter galpa, a ghost-story collection whose publication date is unknown: British Library catalogue record EAP127/1/2/24.
The archive establishes that ghost stories circulated in Bengali popular print; it is not a record of railway incidents or paranormal proof. A different kind of context comes from S. Mukerji’s digitized Indian Ghost Stories. Its literary and anecdotal narratives include a return journey from Darjeeling by train and a train that passes a station without stopping. How to distinguish legend, archive and fiction
- Reported local or journalistic legend: Begunkodar and Chandernagore are stories recounted in the Scroll feature. Their circulation is documented; the supernatural events are not verified.
- Archival catalogue: The British Library record documents a Bengali ghost-story book and its place in a larger popular-print collection. It tells readers about publishing history, not whether a haunting occurred.
- Authored fiction and historical texts: Ray, Siraj, Mukhopadhyay and Mukerji use railway settings for narrative effect. A fictional ghost, double or phantom train is not evidence of a real apparition.
