Guy Delisle’s Hostage recounts humanitarian worker Christophe André’s 1997 abduction and 111 days in captivity through the slow, restrictive rhythms of his confinement. Rather than offer a comprehensive history of the conflict or kidnapping, the graphic nonfiction book focuses on one person’s experience: the effort to keep track of time, endure isolation and find a way through each day.
What is Hostage about?
Hostage is a graphic nonfiction account by cartoonist Guy Delisle, based on the experience of Christophe André, a Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) administrator. Drawn & Quarterly’s publisher-hosted event description says André was abducted in the Caucasus region in 1997 and held for 111 days; the publisher’s account places his work in Ingushetia before the kidnapping. Drawn & Quarterly’s book page also describes the story as a day-to-day account of the psychological effects of solitary confinement.
The book is narrated from André’s perspective. Its subject is the experience of captivity, not a full account of the political conflict, the kidnapping’s negotiations, or the later lives of everyone involved. The New York Review of Books review notes the limited political background and aftermath, while focusing on how André’s voice carries the narrative.
How does the book make captivity feel?
Time becomes part of the structure
Day markers and a largely chronological progression make time visible, but not necessarily orderly or reassuring. The New York Review of Books describes the markers as a record of André’s effort to keep track of time. Their presence gives the reader a measure of duration; the gaps between them also suggest how difficult it is to experience confinement as a sequence of meaningful events.

Small routines fill the rooms
The contrast between the dramatic act of abduction and long stretches in bare rooms is central to the book’s effect. The Rumpus review describes how small routines and internal narration carry these pages. With little external context to break the confinement, attention settles on what André can observe, remember and do. That restraint makes the psychological pressure legible without turning the comic into a broad political explainer.
In a 2017 Toronto Star interview reproduced by Drawn & Quarterly, Delisle explained his intended effect: “I wanted the reader to be stuck there, just like Christophe was, then turn the page and almost suffocate,” he said. The publisher’s interview page presents the remark in the context of Delisle’s approach to the book.

Who was Christophe André?
André was an administrator working for Médecins Sans Frontières, a humanitarian organization. Drawn & Quarterly’s publisher-hosted material places his work in Ingushetia before his abduction in the Caucasus region. Delisle’s portrayal centers on André as a civilian aid worker rather than a professional adventurer. In the same interview, Delisle called him “an administrator, not an adventure guy” and described the book as “the story of an ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation.”
What the book does—and does not—cover
Hostage is most useful to readers looking for a sustained graphic account of one person’s captivity and its psychological texture. Its narrow perspective is also a limit: the available publisher and review descriptions do not establish a comprehensive history of the conflict, a complete operational chronology of the kidnapping, or a full account of negotiations and aftermath. Readers seeking those broader answers will need sources beyond the comic.
