Paapa Essiedu, officially cast as Severus Snape in HBO’s Harry Potter series, says he has received racist abuse and death threats since the casting announcement. He says the abuse has affected him emotionally but also strengthened his resolve to make the character his own. The current official Wizarding World overview says the first season is due to debut Christmas 2026—not 2027—on HBO and HBO Max where available.
What Paapa Essiedu said about the threats
In an interview with The Times of London, as reported by TheWrap on March 21, 2026, Essiedu said he had been told, “Quit or I’ll murder you.” He also described seeing an Instagram message threatening to come to his home and kill him. These are his accounts of specific messages; the reporting does not establish how many threats were made or how widespread the abuse was. TheWrap’s report
Essiedu said the abuse affected him emotionally, while also making him more determined to approach the role on his own terms. “But the abuse fuels me,” he said, according to TheWrap. He added that he wanted to represent children who had imagined themselves in the wizarding world.
How the casting backlash should be understood
Essiedu has described racist abuse and direct threats linked to the casting announcement. That should not be conflated with every disagreement about the casting: the available reports do not show that all criticism was racist or threatening, nor do they quantify the incidents or establish how representative they were of viewers generally.

The Los Angeles Times reported on March 26, 2026, that HBO chief Casey Bloys said the company anticipated aggressive behavior from passionate fans, provided social-media guidance, and had a security team. Those are Bloys’s descriptions of HBO’s preparations, not independent verification of the threats Essiedu described. Los Angeles Times report
