Fountain of Youth may have underperformed against its widely reported production cost, but the available figures do not prove it was Apple’s biggest movie flop. Apple has not published a film-specific budget or viewing total in the sources available; independent audience estimates use different metrics and comparison periods.
Why “Apple’s biggest movie flop” is not established
Calling Fountain of Youth Apple’s biggest movie flop requires comparable figures for the costs and outcomes of Apple’s films, plus a consistent definition of “flop.” The available sources do not provide that dataset. The phrase is an editorial judgment, not a verified company-wide ranking.

There is a reasonable basis to question the film’s performance relative to its reported cost: third-party coverage has cited a $180 million production budget and audience estimates that appear modest beside that figure. But the budget is not confirmed by Apple, and the viewing figures are not Apple-reported totals. They cannot, by themselves, establish profitability or rank the film against every other Apple release.
What the reported audience figures say
The figures below come from different providers, periods, and calculations. They describe US viewing, not a single directly comparable measure; they should not be added together or treated as an official Apple total.

| Figure | What it measures and who reported it | What it can—and cannot—show |
|---|---|---|
| 5.8 million viewing hours | An independent 2025 analysis of major first-half film flops reported this as a Nielsen figure. What’s on Netflix’s analysis | The report used it to characterize the film as a major miss against its cited $180 million budget. It is not an Apple-published total, and hours are not equivalent to complete-viewing estimates. |
| 6.1 million complete-viewing equivalents in the first seven days | Netflix & Chiffres calculated this estimate from Luminate data for the US launch; the analyst described it as Apple’s second-best film launch behind The Gorge. Netflix & Chiffres | This is a launch-window comparison made by that analyst, not an official Apple count or an all-time ranking of financial performance. |
| 765.5 million minutes watched, May 23–29, 2025 | A Reddit post reproduced a figure it attributed to Luminate for US viewing. Reddit post reproducing the chart figure | The post characterized the debut as the biggest Apple movie debut on Luminate’s chart. Because this is a user-posted reproduction rather than Luminate’s original publication, it is weaker evidence and should not settle the ranking. |
| 6.3 million complete-viewing equivalents in the first half of 2025 | Netflix & Chiffres included this estimate in a cross-platform first-half analysis; it said Fountain of Youth and The Gorge (estimated at 6.8 million) did not reach its top-film list. Netflix & Chiffres first-half analysis | This is a different period and comparison set from the first-seven-days launch estimate. It does not contradict a strong Apple launch ranking: a title can rank highly among Apple debuts yet miss a broader cross-platform list. |
Viewing hours, minutes, and complete-viewing equivalents are not interchangeable. The sources also differ in the time windows and competitors they compare. Their figures indicate that the film attracted a measurable audience, but they do not establish one definitive ranking across Apple’s catalogue.
How much did Fountain of Youth cost?
The frequently cited $180 million figure is a third-party reported estimate, not a budget Apple confirmed. It was cited by What’s on Netflix’s 2025 first-half analysis; Apple’s official film announcement and US listing provide film details but no film-level production cost or viewing total. Even if the estimate is accurate, a production budget alone cannot show whether a streaming title made or lost money. The available sources do not disclose the film’s complete costs, the value Apple assigns to its audience, or a title-level financial return. The evidence therefore supports describing the film as a possible high-cost underperformer—not calculating a loss.
Why this is not a box-office flop
Apple announced a global streaming premiere on May 23, 2025. The film was made available on Apple TV+, rather than being presented in the cited sources as a theatrical release whose success can be judged by ticket sales. Comparing a reported production budget with theatrical box-office gross would therefore use the wrong frame for this story.

What the film is and where to watch it
Guy Ritchie directed Fountain of Youth, an action-adventure film written by James Vanderbilt. Apple describes two estranged siblings joining a global heist to find the mythological Fountain of Youth. The cast includes John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, Eiza González, Domhnall Gleeson, Arian Moayed, Laz Alonso, Carmen Ejogo, and Stanley Tucci. Apple lists the 2025 film at 2 hours and 5 minutes on its US viewing page.
Apple identified Apple TV+ as the film’s streaming destination, and the title is listed on Apple TV. Availability can vary by country; the linked listing is Apple’s US page.

What a fair “biggest flop” comparison would require
A defensible ranking would compare titles using the same audience provider, territory, and viewing window, then assess costs and outcomes on a consistent basis. It would also need a stated definition of “flop.” The available reports do not supply comparable official budgets and audience or return figures for Apple’s films, so the superlative remains unverified.
