Warner Bros. Discovery announced an expanded U.S. licensing deal with GKIDS covering 20 additional animated and live-action films for HBO Max. The announcement included a planned 4K streaming debut for Shin Godzilla, but gave no specific premiere date for the film—and does not establish whether it is currently available to stream.
What the HBO Max–GKIDS deal includes
Warner Bros. Discovery said the expanded agreement brings 20 additional GKIDS-licensed animated and live-action films to HBO Max in the United States. It builds on the service’s existing U.S. relationship with GKIDS, which includes the Studio Ghibli catalog. The announcement describes U.S. rights, not worldwide availability. Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2025 announcement
The company described the slate as including “masterpieces and fan favorites” arriving on streaming for the first time. That characterization was attributed to Warner Bros. Discovery; no named executive was identified in the indexed release text.
When is Shin Godzilla coming to HBO Max?
Warner Bros. Discovery placed Shin Godzilla among titles planned for later in 2025 and 2026 and described its arrival as a 4K streaming debut. The indexed announcement did not give the film a specific date. It also does not confirm that the film is currently listed or playable on HBO Max, so check the service’s current catalog for availability rather than treating the planned window as confirmation.

The film was directed by Hideaki Anno and co-directed by Shinji Higuchi. The announcement’s 4K wording concerns the planned streaming presentation; it should not be read as a guarantee about a particular device, subscription tier, or current playback option.
Which films were announced, and when?
The release said the first batch would arrive September 1, 2025. It highlighted works by Makoto Shinkai and said select titles would have North American streaming debuts and 4K streaming debuts for premium subscribers. The indexed text available for the announcement does not provide a complete title-by-title schedule here, so it is not possible to infer the full slate or the exact date of each film from those details alone.
Rank #2
Shin Godzilla was assigned to the later 2025–2026 window rather than the announced September 1 first batch. The announcement is a plan, not proof of later launch or present catalog status.

HBO Max access and physical ownership are separate ways to watch the film. A streaming license does not provide a disc, and purchasing a disc does not provide HBO Max access. GKIDS lists several physical editions on its official Shin Godzilla film page:
