Yes—season three gives Hacks a strong case for remaining one of television’s best comedies, especially as its central partnership grows more intimate without losing its bite. That is a critical judgment, not an objective ranking. And “after season three” is a turning point, not an ending: the series continued through a fifth and final season.
Why season three strengthens the case for Hacks
Deborah and Ava change, rather than reset
Hacks centers on Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), a veteran Las Vegas comedian, and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), the younger writer hired to update her material. Their relationship is both the show’s comic engine and its source of professional conflict: Deborah has power and experience, while Ava brings different instincts and ambitions.

In its 2024 season-three review, TIME described their rapport as more natural and intimate. The change matters because the series does not have to rely only on the original clash between an imperious performer and a frustrated writer. Their growing closeness gives their disagreements more emotional weight.
Comedy becomes a route into character
Deborah’s breakthrough special draws on funny, sad, personal stories from her career as a pioneering woman in a male-dominated business. Ava encourages her to take that creative risk. The resulting tension—between protecting a successful persona and revealing something more personal—ties the show’s entertainment-industry setting to questions of ambition, authorship and control.

The professional world keeps widening
The series also finds material beyond the duo’s immediate working relationship. A 2026 retrospective in The Atlantic describes its movement among generational comedy, Hollywood satire and women’s efforts to gain access to late-night television. Those settings give the characters new institutional pressures to navigate while keeping their partnership at the center.
What the show does after season three
Season three is not the series finale. Hacks went on to a fifth and final season, completing a five-season run. The later story gives the central relationship room to encounter new professional stakes rather than simply repeat its original setup.
Rank #2
One useful way to judge the later seasons is to look at how each changes the Deborah–Ava dynamic, whether its professional setting creates fresh comic and dramatic stakes, how far it expands beyond the pair, and whether it resolves or deliberately preserves their conflict. These are viewing criteria, not a numerical ranking of the seasons.
What recognition can—and cannot—tell you
The Television Academy records Hacks as the winner of Outstanding Comedy Series for season three. That is a specific season award, not proof that every viewer will consider the show a favorite. The Academy’s season-by-season awards record also distinguishes later nominations and wins.

For season four, Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus highlights the lead relationship as a continuing source of comedy, saying the show finds “fresh ways to mine comedic gold” from it. That is an attributed summary of critics’ views, not a universal verdict.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced Hacks: The Complete Series on Blu-ray, with a stated release date of December 8, 2026. The announcement describes a five-season collection with more than four hours of bonus features, including deleted scenes, Inside the Episodes, bloopers and table reads. Since that date is still forthcoming as of October 8, 2026, treat the release as announced rather than already available; check the studio’s announcement and current retailer listings for updated availability.
