Geetanjali Kulkarni and Jameel Khan give the series its emotional centre. Its gentle, anecdotal rhythm is also its main limitation: viewers looking for major twists or rapid escalation may find it too familiar.
What is Gullak about?
Created by TVF as a Hindi original associated with SonyLIV, Gullak follows the Mishras, a middle-class family in a small North Indian town. The household centres on Santosh (Jameel Khan), his wife Shanti (Geetanjali Kulkarni) and their sons. Their modest means, work and study pressures, neighborly interference and hopes of improving their circumstances provide the material for the show’s stories. Sony Pictures Networks India named Khan, Kulkarni, Sunita Rajwar and Vaibhav Raj Gupta among the cast in its original launch announcement.
In Season 1, an earthen piggy bank—the gullak of the title—narrates the family’s anecdotes. That framing suits the series: rather than build every episode toward one high-stakes plot, it finds comedy and feeling in the small incidents that accumulate in a household. The Times of India’s Season 1 review likewise describes the show as a collection of family anecdotes.
What makes the series work?
The Mishras feel like a family, not a premise
The show’s appeal lies in the balance between friction and affection. The Mishras bicker, worry about money and disagree over how to get ahead, but their loyalty shows through the quarrels. Reviewing Season 2, The Indian Express describes a family trying to improve its circumstances on modest means, with daily squabbles balanced by care for one another. That combination gives the stories their warmth without making the household seem effortlessly harmonious.

Performances make the everyday details land
Kulkarni makes Shanti both forceful and recognizably human; Khan gives Santosh a grounded presence. The ensemble is a large part of why familiar domestic situations remain engaging. In her Season 4 review, The Indian Express critic Shubhra Gupta singled out Kulkarni’s ownership of Shanti and the appeal of the family dynamic. The Times of India’s Season 5 review also praises the leads’ chemistry and supporting cast. Those are critical judgments, not a measure of audience consensus.
Gupta summed up the show’s recognizability in her Season 4 review: “The key to this TVF show, created and directed by Shreyansh Pandey, is its relatability — their ‘chotey-chotey-khushi-aur-gham’ are either things we’ve experienced first-hand, or we know people who have — built upon its sheer likeability.”

Is Gullak worth watching?
Yes, if you want an affectionate family comedy-drama whose pleasures come from character, performance and observation rather than suspense. The show makes room for tenderness and comic irritation in the same household, and the familiar setup is part of its comfort. It is a good fit for viewers who enjoy stories about family life and small changes in people’s circumstances.
The same approach can feel predictable if you want substantial plot turns or a steady rise in stakes. Gupta gave Season 4 three out of five in 2024 and argued that the series could use more complexity as the family’s concerns evolve. Reviewing Season 5 in 2026, The Times of India similarly noted that the low-key storytelling may feel familiar to viewers seeking significant developments. These reviews point to a matter of taste, not a universal verdict: consistency may be a draw for one viewer and a constraint for another.

How do the later seasons change the picture?
The family’s concerns shift while the series keeps its domestic focus. The Indian Express’s 2024 review covers Season 4’s five episodes, each roughly 30 minutes, and mentions story threads involving a bribe, a chain-snatching incident, work and social mobility, adolescence and parenting. Those details describe that season, not the format or episode length of the series as a whole.
Season 5 was reported released on SonyLIV on June 5, 2026. Its stories bring in household renovation and Wi-Fi alongside changing expectations and generational differences. Annu is now played by Anant V Joshi, replacing Vaibhav Raj Gupta; Khan and Kulkarni continue as Santosh and Shanti, according to India Today’s Season 5 review. The recasting is worth knowing if you are continuing directly from earlier seasons, though the central parents remain familiar.
