It follows Victor Frankenstein’s attempt to create life and the consequences of bringing the Creature into the world. Netflix lists the film at 2 hours 32 minutes and rates it R; its 2026 awards roundup reports three Academy Award wins.
What is Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein about?
Netflix’s official synopsis centers on Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant, ego-driven scientist, and the Creature brought to life by his experiment. Their relationship drives a story about creation, responsibility, humanity, and the desire for love and understanding. The film is set in mid-19th-century Europe during the Crimean War, where Victor pursues his work with support from a wealthy patron, according to Netflix’s production feature.
The film is a reimagining, not a claim to reproduce the novel scene by scene. Netflix describes the Creature as an independent being rather than a creation Victor can simply control. Calling him only a “monster” can obscure the film’s emphasis on his humanity.
How does the film adapt Mary Shelley’s novel?
The source is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, published in 1818. Del Toro has described the book as profoundly important to him while emphasizing that he wanted to make the story his own. “I’ve lived with Mary Shelley’s creation all my life,” he told Netflix Tudum. He also said, “For me, it’s the Bible. But I wanted to make it my own, to sing it back in a different key with a different emotion.”

That distinction matters if you are deciding whether the film is a close literary adaptation: it draws on Shelley’s premise and themes, but del Toro’s stated aim was to reinterpret them. Netflix’s adaptation coverage says the film debuted at the Venice Film Festival on August 30, 2025.

What went into the film’s production?
Netflix’s craft coverage describes an intentionally tactile production built from extensive sets, props, costumes, prosthetic makeup, and production design. The work of production designer Tamara Deverell, costume designer Kate Hawley, prosthetic designer Mike Hill, and composer Alexandre Desplat helped shape that approach. Del Toro described his desired Creature design as “something newly minted, beautifully firstborn.”
Netflix reports that Desplat’s score combines orchestral music, an 80-piece choir, church organs, electronic sounds, and Norwegian violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing. Production designer Tamara Deverell, speaking to Netflix Tudum, said of del Toro’s ability to envision a finished production: “He is always able to see the finished product, and it’s mind-blowing when you go [and] watch the actual film.”
