Here are the 10 best Hajime no Ippo characters, ranked by how much they contribute to the story, how their relationships and development deepen it, and how they illuminate the series’ central question: what does it mean to be strong? This is a character-writing ranking, not a list of the strongest boxers or a claim about what every fan prefers.
How this ranking works
“Best” is subjective, so the order weighs three things: character development, contribution to the story and its relationships, and thematic resonance. Boxing ability matters when it reveals personality or raises the stakes, but it is not the deciding measure. George Morikawa has described the series’ theme as asking what it means to be strong, making that question a useful lens for reading both the fighters and the people around them. Weekly Young Jump’s interview with Morikawa also discusses creating pressure around characters and revealing them through interaction.

Fan rankings offer a useful point of comparison, not a verdict on writing. VAINKEURZ’s page, updated September 17, 2026, lists 10 contenders based on 626 votes, using an ELO-style system of head-to-head matchups. Its top three are Ippo, Takamura, and Kamogawa; the page cautions that scores for contenders with fewer matchups are approximate and lower positions can shift. That is one community snapshot, not a representative poll of all fans or a ranking of character quality. See the VAINKEURZ ranking and its methodology.
The 10 best Hajime no Ippo characters
1. Ippo Makunouchi
Ippo belongs at the top because the series’ central question is also his personal one. His journey into boxing is not just a climb through opponents; it is an effort to understand what strength means and what it can give him. His earnestness makes the people around him matter: rivals challenge his assumptions, while his gym relationships give his progress emotional weight. The story’s defining idea is clearest when seen through the distance between Ippo’s physical power and his still-developing understanding of himself.
#1 Best Overall
2. Mamoru Takamura
Takamura’s brashness and extraordinary ability make him a vivid presence, but his value to the story goes beyond spectacle. He gives the Kamogawa Gym a forceful model of ambition, and his bond with Kamogawa ties individual achievement to mentorship and shared history. His confidence also complicates the series’ idea of strength: dominance in the ring does not make a character simple, nor does it answer every question about what strength demands.
3. Genji Kamogawa
Kamogawa is both coach and emotional foundation for the gym’s fighters. His influence turns boxing into a relationship: training is not only instruction but also a way of passing on belief, discipline, and a particular idea of strength. He ranks this high because the story’s fighters are shaped by what they receive from him—and by the expectations that come with it. His connection with Takamura is especially important to the series’ portrait of mentorship.
4. Ryō Mashiba
Mashiba brings tension that reaches beyond the ring. As Kumi’s older brother and a former rival to Ippo, he connects the boxing plot to family ties and to the consequences rivalries can have outside competition. His presence makes it harder to treat a fight as an isolated sporting event: opponents can remain part of one another’s lives after the bout is over. The secondary character-and-fighter overview from OtakuKart identifies those roles, though its focus is fighting strength rather than character writing.
5. Ichirō Miyata
Miyata is essential as Ippo’s recurring rival, a counterpunching out-boxer whose contrast with Ippo gives their relationship an enduring dramatic charge. A rival can be more than a future opponent: Miyata gives Ippo an idea to pursue, and their differing approaches make each fighter’s identity easier to see. His ranking reflects that narrative function and the long-running relationship it sustains, not a claim that rivalry alone makes him the series’ best-developed character.

Rank #3
6. Takeshi Sendō
Sendō is a major rival from Osaka whose forceful presence brings a different energy to Ippo’s competitive world. He helps make rivalry feel like a collision of personalities, not just a comparison of records or techniques. His inclusion also underscores why a character ranking cannot simply follow gym membership or a popularity tally: an opponent can shape the protagonist’s story as powerfully as a mentor or teammate.
7. Alexander Volg Zangief
Volg adds an international dimension to the series’ boxing world and broadens the range of people whose lives are shaped by the sport. His place here rests on the value of that wider perspective: he is not merely another measure of Ippo’s ability, but part of the story’s larger community of fighters. The available secondary overview includes him among notable boxers, but does not establish a ranking of character writing.
Rank #4
8. Masaru Aoki
Aoki earns his place through the Kamogawa Gym’s ensemble dynamic. The community ranking’s inclusion of Aoki among its leading contenders reflects one limited measure of fan preference, but his narrative value is not reducible to votes. His presence helps make the gym feel like a group of distinct people rather than a backdrop designed solely for Ippo’s progress.
9. Tatsuya Kimura
Kimura, like Aoki, matters as part of the gym’s wider circle of friends and fighters. His place in a character-focused list recognizes the importance of companionship and shared struggle in a story otherwise driven by individual bouts and ambitions. The VAINKEURZ snapshot puts him fifth among its 10 contenders, but that platform ranking measures its own head-to-head community results, not a settled judgment of narrative merit.

10. Ricardo Martinez
Ricardo represents the distance between a protagonist’s present and the highest level of the boxing world. A figure of this stature can give a story its horizon: he makes ambition concrete without needing to share the same kind of day-to-day relationship as a teammate or coach. He completes the list because the world beyond the Kamogawa Gym matters to Ippo’s journey, even when a character’s narrative function differs from that of the core ensemble.

A separate strongest-fighter ranking uses a different yardstick and includes rivals and world-level boxers such as Date, Hawk, and Eagle alongside several names on this list. That kind of comparison can help distinguish ring ability from storytelling importance, but it does not decide which characters are best written. Likewise, VAINKEURZ’s September 2026 ranking offers a dated snapshot of community preferences among its 10 contenders—not an independent survey of character quality. For broader context, Kodansha’s 2026 announcement describes Hajime no Ippo as having sold more than 100 million copies worldwide; that publisher-reported series figure says nothing specific about which character readers prefer.
