The greatest albums of 1980 depend on what you value: influence, originality, lasting critical regard, or commercial reach. This cross-genre selection weighs those qualities alongside how distinctive each record is as a complete album; chart success is context, not a quality score. It includes rock, post-punk, New Wave, synth-pop, metal and more, because 1980’s musical story cannot be told through one genre alone.

How to judge the greatest albums of 1980

There is no authoritative, universally agreed ranking. Rolling Stone’s list of 80 albums places The Clash’s London Calling at number one, a useful and prominent editorial view—not a consensus measurement. Its introduction describes a year when punk and New Wave branched into synth-pop, post-punk, goth, New Romantic, two-tone ska and early indie rock; funk and disco streamlined; metal sharpened; and established rock, country and R&B artists continued to evolve.

The selections below balance critical standing, influence, distinctiveness and the strength of the album as a whole. Commercial performance is noted separately where a source establishes it. No common scoring system across these criteria exists, so the order is a guide rather than a calculated scorecard.

12 essential albums released in 1980

1. The Clash — London Calling

Rolling Stone ranks London Calling first on its 80-album list. Its place at the top makes it an obvious starting point for a year defined by stylistic range: The Clash’s album is the leading choice in that publication’s editorial view, not an uncontested verdict on the year.

2. Talking Heads — Remain in Light

A major entry in Rolling Stone’s ranking and Album of the Year’s 1980 release catalog, Remain in Light represents the year’s adventurous New Wave side. It belongs in a broad survey alongside punk, metal and pop rather than being treated as a niche alternative to them.

3. Prince — Dirty Mind

Rolling Stone singles out Dirty Mind and Remain in Light as October 8 releases. Prince’s album is one of the year’s defining pop and funk entries in this selection, underscoring how far 1980’s important records reached beyond guitar-led rock.

4. Joy Division — Closer

Rolling Stone notes that Closer and Echo and the Bunnymen’s Crocodiles arrived on the same day, July 18. The pairing captures two significant post-punk releases from the same moment, with Joy Division’s album an essential part of any account of the year’s darker, more experimental turn.

5. Echo and the Bunnymen — Crocodiles

Crocodiles makes a useful companion to Closer: both appeared July 18, according to Rolling Stone. Including the two together shows that post-punk in 1980 was not a single sound or a single band’s story.

6. Iron Maiden — Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden’s self-titled debut and Judas Priest’s British Steel share an April 14 release day noted by Rolling Stone. The debut marks one pole of a year in which heavy music was becoming faster, sharper and more forceful.

7. Judas Priest — British Steel

British Steel is the other half of that April 14 pairing. Its inclusion beside Iron Maiden makes the year’s metal story easier to see: two prominent releases arrived together, offering distinct entries into a genre gaining momentum.

10. The Cure — Seventeen Seconds

The Cure’s Seventeen Seconds appears in Album of the Year’s release catalog and belongs in a survey of the year’s post-punk and goth developments. It helps show how the period’s darker currents sat alongside brighter pop and metal.

11. Black Sabbath — Heaven and Hell

Black Sabbath’s Heaven and Hell is listed among 1980 releases by Album of the Year. Its presence makes room for an established metal act in a year when heavy music’s sound and profile were shifting.

12. ABBA — Super Trouper

For a commercial rather than critical lens, ABBA’s Super Trouper has a particularly clear distinction: Official Charts identifies it as the UK’s best-selling album of 1980 and says it spent more weeks at number one on the Official Albums Chart than any other album that year. That is a UK chart-performance fact, not a global sales figure or proof of an objective artistic ranking.

Other notable 1980 albums

Album of the Year’s 1980 release catalog also includes Bauhaus’s In the Flat Field, Steely Dan’s Gaucho, and AC/DC’s Back in Black. They extend the year’s range across goth, polished rock and hard rock. This catalog is a release reference, not a ranking, and its displayed user scores can change over time.

Why the 1980 Grammy winner is not a 1980 release-year pick

The Recording Academy’s Album of the Year page for the 1980 awards names Billy Joel’s 52nd Street as the winner. The award honored recordings released from October 1, 1978, through September 30, 1979, so the ceremony’s year does not identify the best album released during calendar 1980.
