In November 2024, the Los Angeles Police Department said actor Chanel Maya Banks had been found safe in Texas and that it suspected no foul play. Her relatives disputed whether the person police located was Banks. The contemporaneous reports documented those conflicting accounts; they do not establish her circumstances today.
What happened, according to the November 2024 reports?
Banks’s family said they had not heard from her since October 30, 2024. ABC News reported that family account and the LAPD’s later announcement. The date is attributed to relatives, not independently established in the reports. ABC News
The Los Angeles Times reported that a missing-person report was filed on November 8. LAPD said Banks was found in Texas on November 11. LAPD Officer David Cuellar told the paper, “For our purposes, she was found Nov. 11, 2024, in Texas.” Los Angeles Times
Why did police and family disagree?
The LAPD’s account
The LAPD said Banks was safe, that no foul play was suspected, and that its case was closed, ABC News reported. Those are the department’s statements, not an independent resolution of the family’s concerns. ABC News

The family’s response
Relatives questioned whether the woman encountered in Texas was Banks. ABC News and ABC7 reported that family members remained unconvinced, including after viewing body-camera footage. Their doubt was a dispute over identity; the cited reports do not establish that the person police encountered was someone else. ABC News ABC7 Los Angeles
What did Banks reportedly say?
The Los Angeles Times reported that Banks said she had left on a trip to distance herself from her family. The paper quoted her saying, “I’m fine.” Separately, ABC7 reported that messages posted to an account under Banks’s name said, “I am not missing,” and alleged that she had left to escape her family. The account’s authorship was not independently authenticated in those reports, so the posts should be understood as statements attributed to that account, not verified evidence.
