Turner’s memoir says he slept on her sofa for several nights. Nist says they shared her bed the first night and that Turner offered to move to the couch after she told him she could not sleep. Their accounts conflict, and the memoir anecdote is not independently established.
What does Turner say happened at Nist’s home?
In an excerpt from his memoir published by Entertainment Weekly and distributed by AOL, Turner recounts driving from Indiana to visit Nist in New Jersey about a week after their wedding. He says she brought out sheets and pillows and asked, “Do you mind sleeping on the sofa?” Turner writes that what began as one night on the sofa became two, then three.

That is Turner’s account in his memoir, Golden Years: What I’ve Learned from Love, Loss, and Reality TV. It describes the New Jersey visit; it does not establish that the couple took their planned Italian honeymoon.
How does Nist dispute the memoir account?
In her response to Entertainment Weekly, Nist said she and Turner slept together in her small bed the first night. She said she could not sleep because she had been sleeping alone for nine years, and that Turner offered to sleep on the couch after she told him. Nist said she promised to have a king-sized bed set up before his next visit, ordered the bed and linens, and that Turner never returned.

Nist questioned Turner’s recollection, saying: “I’m not sure if Gerry has a faulty memory or if he just wanted a more dramatic story for his book.” In a later written response to Vanity Fair, she said: “None of what Gerry Turner has said in his disparaging remarks about me is true, and none of the interactions we had are stated in the way that they actually happened. It is fiction.” These are Nist’s objections to Turner’s portrayal; neither account independently resolves what happened.
Was this their Italian honeymoon?
No evidence in the accounts establishes that the sofa episode happened on a trip to Italy. The memoir passage and Nist’s rebuttal concern Turner’s visit to her New Jersey home. Italy had been discussed as a trip, but that planned travel should not be confused with this home visit.

What did they say when they announced their divorce?
Turner and Nist married in a televised ceremony on January 4, 2024. On April 12, 2024, they announced their divorce together on Good Morning America. At the time, they cited their inability to settle on a living arrangement and their commitments to their families as reasons they believed living apart was best, while both said they still loved one another.
Turner said in the interview: “Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations, and we’ve looked closely at our situation, our living situation, so forth and — and we’ve kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it’s probably time for us to — dissolve our marriage.”

Did they later give other explanations?
Later accounts added points of disagreement. Nist said the split involved more than where they would live; Turner discussed her work plans as well as competing family and home priorities. These were retrospective explanations, not a jointly established account of why the marriage ended. In a November 7, 2025 interview with Vanity Fair, Nist also disputed the way Turner depicted their interactions in his memoir.
