Bobby Vylan led the crowd in chants including “Free, free Palestine” and “Death, death to the IDF.” The BBC later said it should have pulled the stream during the performance; police ultimately took no further action in the Glastonbury case, according to later reporting.

How did Glastonbury respond?
Co-organizer Emily Eavis condemned the chants, saying they “very much crossed a line.” The festival said it had no place for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence. Eavis also distinguished the presence of an artist on the bill from endorsement of that artist’s views: the festival statement noted that Glastonbury 2025 had almost 4,000 performances and that artists or speakers might hold views the organizers did not share.
“Their chants very much crossed a line and we are urgently reminding everyone involved in the production of the Festival that there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence.”

— Emily Eavis, Glastonbury co-organizer, as quoted by Sky News
“With almost 4,000 performances at Glastonbury 2025, there will inevitably be artists and speakers appearing on our stages whose views we do not share, and a performer’s presence here should never be seen as a tacit endorsement of their opinions and beliefs.”
— Glastonbury Festival statement, quoted by The Times of Israel
What did the BBC say about the livestream?
The BBC said some comments during the set were “deeply offensive.” It noted that an on-screen warning about very strong and discriminatory language had appeared, and said the performance would not be made available on demand. These were the broadcaster’s initial responses; they did not stop the live stream at the time.

“Some of the comments made during Bob Vylan’s set were deeply offensive.”
— BBC statement, quoted by Sky News
In a later acknowledgment, the BBC said that, with hindsight, it should have pulled the stream during the performance. That admission concerned the live broadcast decision, separate from the earlier warning and decision not to offer the set on demand. Rolling Stone UK reported the festival and BBC statements.

What did the government say?
On June 29, 2025, Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the chant and said the BBC needed to explain how the scenes came to be broadcast. His description was a political reaction, not a legal finding.
“There is no excuse for this kind of appalling hate speech.”

What happened with the police investigation?
Avon and Somerset Police initially said officers would assess video evidence to determine whether any offences might have been committed that required a criminal investigation. Later reporting said the force ended its investigation into the Glastonbury incident in December 2025 with no further action. The Independent’s 2026 report covered that outcome; it also discussed a separate Metropolitan Police investigation concerning remarks at a London rally in 2026. That later case is distinct from the Avon and Somerset process relating to Glastonbury. The reported no-further-action outcome does not establish a broader legal judgment about the chant.
Quick Recap
How the responses differed
- Glastonbury: Eavis and the festival condemned the chants while saying that booking an artist did not mean endorsing the artist’s views.
- BBC: The broadcaster issued an on-screen warning, declined to make the set available on demand and later said it should have stopped the livestream.
- Government: Starmer condemned the incident and called for an explanation of the BBC broadcast.
- Police: Avon and Somerset Police assessed the evidence; later reporting says the Glastonbury investigation concluded with no further action in December 2025.
