Ghost of Yōtei is a new game in the Ghost of Tsushima franchise, but it is not a direct story sequel. Sucker Punch revealed it during PlayStation’s September 24, 2024 State of Play. It stars Atsu in 1600s rural Japan, around 300 years after the earlier game, and launched for PS5 on October 2, 2025.
Is Ghost of Yōtei a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima?
No. Sucker Punch says Ghost of Yōtei is not a direct continuation of Ghost of Tsushima’s story. It is part of the same franchise and builds on the earlier game’s design and mythos, but it follows a different protagonist in a different place and period. Sucker Punch’s official FAQ makes that distinction explicit.

What is Ghost of Yōtei about?
The game follows Atsu in rural Japan during the 1600s. Sony describes its setting as 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, placing it well beyond Jin Sakai’s story rather than presenting it as the next chapter in his life. The new protagonist, story, and region give the game a fresh starting point within the series. Sony’s launch announcement describes the setting and timeline.

Sucker Punch announced Ghost of Yōtei at PlayStation’s State of Play on September 24, 2024. The studio introduced it as a new PS5 game with a new protagonist, story, and region, and described it as its first game built from the ground up for PS5. The original announcement is distinct from the later gameplay presentation.

When did it come out, and what platform is it on?
Ghost of Yōtei launched worldwide for PS5 on October 2, 2025, with PS5 Pro support. The July 10, 2025 State of Play was a separate, gameplay-focused presentation; it was not the game’s reveal. PlayStation covered that presentation in its July gameplay update.
