Its directors have named specific connections to Sanjuro and Yojimbo, while the optional Kurosawa Mode evokes the black-and-white chanbara films of the 1950s and ’60s. The key difference is that a film controls the frame and pace; the game lets players discover its world and choose how to approach its encounters.
How Kurosawa’s films influenced the game
Sucker Punch’s directors describe Kurosawa as a major influence, but the connection is more precise than saying the game simply copies his style. In an interview with The Criterion Collection, cinematics director Billy Harper called many of the game’s cinematics “a love letter to Akira Kurosawa.” The developers also describe a broader debt to classic chanbara—the Japanese sword-fighting film tradition—and to filmmakers beyond Kurosawa, including Masaki Kobayashi.
The references vary in how directly they map to gameplay. Two named films are tied to specific design ideas; others are broader visual or personal touchstones.
| Film or tradition | Documented connection |
|---|---|
| Sanjuro (Kurosawa) | Director Nate Fox says the game’s standoffs directly represent the standoff at the film’s end. |
| Yojimbo (Kurosawa) | Director Jason Connell links the guiding-wind idea to a moment when Toshiro Mifune’s character tosses a stick and lets chance suggest a direction. |
| Seven Samurai (Kurosawa) | Fox names it as an example of the elegance of classic samurai films, a broad touchstone rather than a source for one specific feature. |
| Ran (Kurosawa) | Connell says the film changed how he thought about cinematography and photography. A connection to the game’s opening is the interviewer’s interpretation, not a stated one-to-one adaptation. |
| Harakiri (Masaki Kobayashi) | Connell associates its wind-blown grass with the game; Fox says its duel sequence helped the team consider anticipation, negative space, and pacing. |
| Classic chanbara | The directors describe the genre’s black-and-white films of the 1950s and ’60s as a reference for the game’s Kurosawa Mode. |
How film references became game mechanics
Sanjuro and the standoff
Fox traces the standoff mechanic to the closing standoff in Sanjuro. In the game, the player initiates a tense face-off and must judge when to strike. The film provides a clear dramatic reference; the game turns that kind of anticipation into a decision the player makes in the moment. Fox’s explanation appears in Criterion’s interview with the directors.

Yojimbo and the guiding wind
Connell connects the guiding wind to a scene in Yojimbo in which Mifune’s character tosses a stick and follows the direction chance gives him. In Ghost of Tsushima, wind offers a directional cue through the landscape. It is not a fixed cinematic shot: the player chooses a destination and uses the cue while exploring.
What Kurosawa Mode changes
Kurosawa Mode is an optional presentation treatment that makes the game black and white and filters its audio to evoke older television or speakers. Connell says the team adjusted the image across different weather, lighting, interiors and exteriors, and day and night conditions. The audio director added a filter to support the older-film effect.

Connell also recounts that, when the team considered calling the feature “Kurosawa Mode,” a producer contacted the Kurosawa estate. The team sent a 45-second sample video; after the estate liked it, an agreement followed. This is the developers’ account of seeking and receiving approval for the mode—not evidence that the estate designed or technically developed it. The mode evokes a film era and genre, but the game remains an interactive work rather than a Kurosawa film.
How the game differs from a samurai film
A film’s camera, editing and sequence of events are fixed for its audience. Ghost of Tsushima can use cinematic compositions and familiar dramatic cues, but the player moves through its world, decides what to pursue and encounters events through play. Fox describes cinema as a shared emotional reference for the team, then distinguishes games through the player’s presence and personal discovery of the world. As he puts it, “We’re making games so that you get to be very present in the action.”

That difference also shapes combat. In a PlayStation developer Q&A, Fox and Connell say players can favor the sword, bow or stealth, without a binary karma choice forcing a single route. The cinematic references inform the mood and design, but they do not prescribe one correct way to play.
The 1274 setting is distinct from the film homage
The game is set during the 1274 Mongol invasion of Tsushima, within the Kamakura period. Sucker Punch lead concept artist Ian Jun Wei Chiew identifies the invasion as the main story inspiration and describes research into the period, Japanese culture, old samurai films and Tsushima itself. His account of the studio’s approach appears in PlayStation.Blog’s concept-art feature.

That setting and the film references serve different purposes: the invasion provides the story’s historical frame, while cinema shaped presentation and design. The developers’ descriptions of their research establish creative intent, not historical accuracy for every event, custom or character in the game.

For a focused comparison, start with Sanjuro and Yojimbo: the directors connect each to a recognizable game idea. Then watch Seven Samurai for a broader example of the samurai-film tradition the developers cite. Ran offers a view into Connell’s personal response to Kurosawa’s visual storytelling, while Kobayashi’s Harakiri broadens the comparison beyond Kurosawa to another influence the directors name. These are useful viewing companions, not claims that the game adapts any one of them.
