George A. Romero never completed a Resident Evil feature film. The work that has now surfaced is a documentary about his unrealized adaptation, directed by Brandon Salisbury. It examines the abandoned project through archival footage, recovered documents and interviews—not a newly discovered Romero movie.
What is the documentary?
George Romero’s Resident Evil is a documentary about Romero’s attempt to adapt the Resident Evil game. Production company Key 13 Films describes it as an investigation into why his vision was never produced, drawing on archival footage, recovered documents and newly filmed interviews. Key 13 Films

Brandon Salisbury directed the film. He characterized Romero’s influence in the distributor announcement this way: “George Romero gave birth to modern horror, the modern zombie, and ultimately Resident Evil.” That is Salisbury’s assessment of Romero’s legacy, not a neutral finding about the game’s origins. Why was Romero’s Resident Evil never made?
The documentary’s central question is why Romero’s adaptation did not reach production. The available accounts establish that the project was abandoned, but they do not provide a complete, independently verified explanation for every decision behind it. Treat specific reasons as explanations offered by the documentary, its interviewees or reporting—not as settled fact unless independently corroborated.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
That distinction matters because the documentary reconstructs a project that never became a finished feature. Its archival materials and interviews can illuminate the story, but they do not turn the unmade film into a released Romero work.
Where can you watch it?
Uncork’d Entertainment acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights. Its reported announcement set the digital and on-demand release for January 7, 2025; that is a historical release date, not confirmation that the film is available on a particular service today. What the documentary can—and cannot—tell you
This is a documentary about the history of an unrealized adaptation, not a substitute for a Romero-directed Resident Evil film. Its interviews and recovered materials offer a way to explore the project, but the sources documenting the film do not settle every question about why it stopped. For historical European distribution context, Time Extension reported an announced German disc release; that announcement does not establish current availability in Europe or elsewhere.
