George Clooney praised Joe Biden for withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, saying Biden deserved the credit for making what Clooney called “the most selfless thing.” At a September 1, 2024, press conference for Wolfs at the Venice Film Festival, Clooney also said his earlier New York Times essay had no hand in Biden’s decision.
What did George Clooney say about Biden dropping out?
Clooney directed his praise at Biden, not at himself. The Associated Press quoted him saying: “The person who should be applauded is the president, who did the most selfless thing that anybody’s done since George Washington, and that’s true.”

He made the remark while speaking to reporters about Wolfs at the Venice Film Festival. Biden had already withdrawn from the 2024 race, so Clooney’s comments were a response to the decision, not an announcement about Biden’s candidacy. The Associated Press report includes video from the press conference.
Did Clooney say his essay caused Biden to leave the race?
No. Clooney said his essay had no hand in Biden’s decision and that Biden deserved the credit. The timing is clear, but it does not establish that the essay caused Biden to withdraw.

How the essay and withdrawal fit into the timeline
On July 10, 2024, Clooney published a New York Times essay arguing that Democrats should choose a new presidential nominee. Biden withdrew from the race afterward. Clooney’s remarks in Venice on September 1 were his first public response to the fallout from the essay, according to The Washington Post.
Time’s account also places Biden’s withdrawal 11 days after Clooney’s essay and reports that Clooney later praised Biden and endorsed Kamala Harris. That sequence supplies context, not proof that Clooney prompted Biden’s choice.
