Gene Hackman could be difficult to work with on The Royal Tenenbaums, according to several people involved—but “nightmare” overstates what the accounts establish. Bill Murray later recalled Hackman being “really difficult” and hard on director Wes Anderson. Anderson and castmates also remembered feeling intimidated or concerned. Yet Anderson said he enjoyed working with Hackman, and the accounts also praise Hackman’s acting and contribution to the film.

What people involved said about Hackman

Bill Murray remembered friction with Anderson

In a 2025 Associated Press account, Murray described Hackman as “a tough nut” who was “really good” but also “really difficult.” Murray recalled him being rough on Anderson, then a young director, and said older actors can be hard on younger directors. Murray’s recollection was not simply an indictment: he praised Hackman as a great actor and recalled him patiently completing repeated takes when another performer was struggling. The Associated Press report presents Murray’s comments as a retrospective account.

Anderson and castmates recalled feeling intimidated

At a 2011 event marking the film’s tenth anniversary, Anderson said Hackman had been “very challenging” with him, but added that watching Hackman launch into scenes was exciting. Anderson also said Hackman was one of the people who drew everyone into the movie. Gwyneth Paltrow and Anderson said they had been scared of working with him; Anjelica Huston recalled being scared, while saying her concern was more about protecting Anderson. These recollections were reported by The Playlist; they are not a comprehensive account from every cast or crew member.

Why the working relationship may have been difficult

A contemporary 2001 Los Angeles Times profile suggests the tension involved differing working styles, not simply personal hostility. Anderson said Hackman did not need much direction and seemed least comfortable when the director arrived with a preconceived idea for a scene. Hackman, in turn, discussed how younger directors and older actors might lack a shared shorthand. He praised Anderson’s ability to maintain a focused vision, describing the difficulty of carrying a concept through a production without it being “corrupted by actors or set designers or something.” The profile offers a close-to-production perspective alongside the later recollections.

That context matters: a director’s desire to execute a specific conception can collide with an established actor’s independence and experience. The available accounts point to a mismatch around direction and control of scenes, but do not document a complete pattern of incidents or establish how every person on set experienced Hackman.

The production also had a collaborative side

The film’s production notes describe a demanding schedule: producer Barry Mendel said the crew shot 240 scenes in 60 days. The notes also describe cast members gathering together between scenes. Hackman praised the support of good colleagues, saying they helped him stretch and take chances, while other cast members spoke positively about the ensemble. These details complicate a one-note picture of a hostile set; they do not cancel out the reported tension. Cinema.com’s production notes do not state a publication year for the 240-scenes figure.

So, was Hackman a “nightmare” to work with?

The fairest answer is that some people found Hackman intimidating or difficult, particularly in his interactions with Anderson, while also respecting his talent and the force he brought to the film. Murray’s 2025 recollection and the 2011 anniversary discussion support describing the relationship as challenging. They do not prove that Hackman was impossible for everyone to work with, that the behavior was constant, or that the whole production was defined by conflict. Murray’s fuller comments are reported by The A.V. Club.
