Gina Gershon has recalled that her agents warned she would ruin her career—and “never work again”—if she took the lesbian role in Bound. She chose the part anyway, saying she trusted the script and was willing to leave her agents rather than give it up.
What did Gina Gershon’s agents tell her about Bound?
In a 2024 account reported by The Independent, Gershon recalled that her agents objected to her playing Corky, a lesbian character in the film. As she remembered it, they told her: “We will not let you do this movie. You are ruining your career.” She said they also warned they could not represent her and that she would “never work again” if she accepted.
Gershon’s response, in the same account, was: “Oh, well, I guess if you can’t represent me, I’ll go somewhere else.” This was her recollection of a conversation with her representatives, not an independently verified statement from the agents or evidence that the whole industry shared their view.
Why did Gina Gershon leave her agents?
Gershon said she believed in the script and wanted to play the role. In a 2015 recollection published by AfterEllen, she likewise said her agents told her the role would end her career because she was “playing a lesbian,” and that she left them over the disagreement.

She also saw Corky as an unusual chance to play a female hero. As quoted by The Independent, Gershon said: “Plus, when does the girl get to play the hero, you know? I thought, well, I could cut off my hair, cut off my nails, have no makeup. I get the girl. I get the car. I screw over the mob. It’s a win-win all around.”
What is Bound about?
Bound is a 1996 U.S. film written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski. Gershon plays Corky, a plumber, opposite Jennifer Tilly as Violet. Their affair develops alongside a plan to steal money from the mob, making the film both a crime thriller and a story about trust. Criterion’s film page lists the cast and credits and describes the film’s special edition.

Gershon resisted reducing the film to its characters’ sexuality. In The Independent, she said it was “so shortsighted” to call it simply a lesbian movie: “I mean, they happen to be lesbians. They happen to be into women,” she said, adding, “but it’s really a movie about trust.”

Gershon later said she was briefly typecast. In her AfterEllen recollection, she described being pigeonholed for a time into lesbian or rock-and-roll roles; in an earlier interview with The A.V. Club, she said she may have been typecast “for a second.” She also said she was proud she made Bound.
