Filmmaker Nick Cassavetes publicly said in June 2024 that his mother, actor Gena Rowlands, had Alzheimer’s disease. He estimated that she had been living with it for about five years. Rowlands died on August 14, 2024, at age 94.
What Nick Cassavetes said about his mother
During an interview marking the 20th anniversary of The Notebook, Cassavetes discussed Rowlands’s role as older Allie, a character with Alzheimer’s. He told the Los Angeles Times, which reported his comments on June 25, 2024, that she had Alzheimer’s for the preceding five years. He described her as being in “full dementia”; that was his wording, not a formal clinical stage.
“I got my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer’s and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she’s had Alzheimer’s,” Cassavetes said in the Entertainment Weekly interview, as quoted by the Times.
What is known—and what is not
The public account is Cassavetes’s statement about his mother. It gives an approximate duration, not a confirmed date when symptoms began or when clinicians made a diagnosis. The reports do not establish Rowlands’s symptoms, treatment, care arrangements, or the tests her doctors may have used. Her performance in The Notebook is not evidence about her personal medical history.

In general, the Alzheimer’s Association says a clinical evaluation may include medical history, mental-status tests, physical and neurological examinations, diagnostic tests, and brain imaging. That is general guidance; it does not describe Rowlands’s individual care. See the Association’s overview of Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
The connection to The Notebook
Rowlands played older Allie in the 2004 film, directed by her son. The character has Alzheimer’s, and Cassavetes brought up his mother’s illness while reflecting on the film two decades later. The parallel explains the context of his disclosure, but the fictional character’s story should not be treated as a portrayal of Rowlands’s diagnosis or experience.

The Alzheimer’s Association estimated that 7.4 million Americans age 65 and older were living with Alzheimer’s in 2026. That national estimate provides context only and says nothing about Rowlands’s personal circumstances. The Association also reported in 2024 that mutations in any of three specified genes account for 1% or less of Alzheimer’s dementia cases; that population-level statistic does not support speculation about Rowlands or her family.
