He had played guitar before switching to bass. Reflecting on the change, he told the Guardian: “I found it more rewarding playing the bass guitar than playing rhythm.” He also described his musical grounding as “good old northern soul and funk grooves.” Those recollections offer his own explanation for the instrument and feel he brought to his playing.
What was his role in the Stone Roses?
In the early 1980s, Mounfield formed the Fireside Chaps with guitarist John Squire and Andy Couzens. After changes to the group’s lineup and name, Ian Brown joined as singer and the band became the Stone Roses. The group played its first official gig in October 1984; the Official Charts Company says Mounfield joined in 1987.

He played bass on the band’s 1989 self-titled debut, which helped define the Madchester era. The album includes “I Wanna Be Adored,” “She Bangs The Drums” and “I Am The Resurrection.” The Associated Press describes its sound as a mix of classic-rock riffs and dance music, while the Guardian points to the interlocking grooves between Mounfield and drummer Alan “Reni” Wren.
The Stone Roses released their second album, Second Coming, in 1994. The group split in 1996. Mounfield later returned when the band reunited from 2011 to 2017; during that period the reunited Roses played shows and released two new songs, “All for One” and “Beautiful Thing.”

- XTRMNTR (2000)
- Evil Heat (2002)
- Riot City Blues (2006)
- Beautiful Future (2008)
Pitchfork reports that he left Primal Scream in 2011 to rejoin the Stone Roses. Beyond those two bands, the Associated Press reports that he joined Freebass, a bass-player group with Andy Rourke of the Smiths and Peter Hook of New Order, and appeared in the 2022 film 24 Hour Party People.
