Dark Winds is an AMC crime drama about Navajo police officers investigating violent crimes in the 1970s American Southwest. Netflix Tudum reported that Season 4 began streaming on Netflix on July 4, 2026, though availability can vary by country. The Game of Thrones connection is executive producer George R. R. Martin—not creator: the series was created by Graham Roland and draws on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels.
What is Dark Winds about?
Set in the Four Corners region, Dark Winds follows Navajo police officers Lt. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Sgt. Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and Sgt. Bernadette “Bern” Manuelito (Jessica Matten). The series combines crime investigations with a Western-noir atmosphere and cultural and spiritual themes rooted in its setting.

Season 4 centers on the search for a Native teenager who has gone missing from a Catholic boarding school. The case takes the investigators to Los Angeles, where they face a killer with ties to organized crime. AMC describes the season as eight hour-long episodes.
Is Dark Winds on Netflix?
Yes, at least in the availability reported by Netflix Tudum on July 4, 2026: Season 4 was streaming on Netflix then. AMC’s February 2026 announcement said the first three seasons were available through the AMC Collection on Netflix, while the fourth season had its AMC and AMC+ premiere on February 15, 2026, followed by weekly Sunday episodes. Streaming catalogs differ by territory, so check Netflix in your country for the seasons currently offered.

The show remains an AMC production with an AMC/AMC+ release path; its appearance on Netflix does not mean every season is available everywhere or that Netflix is its sole home.
Who created the series, and what is the Game of Thrones connection?
George R. R. Martin, known for A Song of Ice and Fire, the fantasy series adapted as Game of Thrones, is an executive producer of Dark Winds. He did not create the show. Graham Roland is its creator, and the series is based on characters and stories from Tony and Anne Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee books.

- On a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley in 1971, Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee, who has his own old scores to settle.
What books is Dark Winds based on?
The television series adapts and draws inspiration from the Leaphorn & Chee mysteries rather than translating each season into a one-to-one screen version of a single novel. The Hillerman family identifies five books as inspirations for the first four seasons:
- Listening Woman
- People of Darkness
- Dance Hall of the Dead
- The Sinister Pig
- The Ghostway
Anne Hillerman has described the show as a reason viewers might seek out the books, noting that the writers and directors—including many Indigenous creatives—have added their own twists. The novels are related source material, not episode-by-episode substitutes.

Is the “takes over Netflix” claim still current?
No current ranking is established here. The headline’s chart claim traces to a BGR article published November 7, 2025, which said Dark Winds ranked eighth on Netflix’s U.S. TV chart at that time. That is a dated snapshot, not evidence of the show’s position today or of current viewership. Netflix Tudum’s July 2026 report confirms Season 4’s availability, but not an ongoing chart placement.

AMC announced a Season 5 renewal on February 5, 2026. The network said the season would have eight hour-long episodes and planned a 2027 debut. That is AMC’s announced schedule, not a guarantee that the date or release details cannot change.
