Fury 325 is a steel roller coaster at Carowinds, the amusement park on the North Carolina–South Carolina border. The park’s ride description lists a 325-foot height, speeds up to 95 mph and a 3:25 ride duration. Its hornet theme draws on Charlotte’s historic “Hornet’s Nest” nickname, linking the ride’s high-speed flight motif to the region’s history.
What is Fury 325?
Fury 325 is a steel giga coaster designed and manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M), which Carowinds identified in its 2015 launch announcement as a Swiss company based in Monthey. The park’s official ride page describes the coaster as more than 1.25 miles of track and lists three open-air trains, each seating 32 passengers.

Carowinds describes Fury 325 as North America’s tallest, fastest and longest giga coaster in its 2025 tenth-anniversary article. Those are the park’s claims in that article, not a guarantee of a current ranking; coaster records and comparisons can change.
How the hornet theme connects to Charlotte
Carowinds says the ride was designed to evoke the flight of an angry hornet. The theme references Charlotte’s Revolutionary-era reputation as a “hornet’s nest of rebellion” and the city’s “Hornet’s Nest” nickname, according to the park’s anniversary history. That connection gives the title “Fury” a local historical context rather than making the hornet imagery a purely decorative choice.

What happens on the ride?
According to the park, the train climbs 325 feet before plunging down an 81-degree drop. The track then includes a 190-foot barrel turn and a fast S-curve, with speeds reaching up to 95 mph. Carowinds also describes a 91-degree overbanked horseshoe turn, the “Hive Dive” beneath a pedestrian bridge, a banked curve, a camelback hill and a double maneuver.
The listed 3:25 duration is the ride time given by Carowinds; it is not a promise about the total time spent in the queue or boarding area. The park’s page describes weightlessness and rapid side-to-side movement as part of the ride.
Opening and construction
Carowinds says it unveiled the project on August 21, 2014, and that Fury 325 opened to the public on March 28, 2015. A VIP ribbon-cutting took place three days earlier, on March 25. The park’s 2025 anniversary article says construction took approximately eight months and lists these construction figures:
- 6,602 feet of track
- Approximately 4.2 million pounds of steel
- 3,400 gallons of paint
- 15,500 bolts
- 60,000 labor hours
These are figures published by Carowinds in its 2025 account. Its 6,602-foot track measurement is consistent with the ride page’s description of more than 1.25 miles.
Awards cited by Carowinds
In its anniversary article, Carowinds says Fury 325 won Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Award for Best New Ride in its first season and received the Best Steel Coaster award in 2016. The park’s account identifies the awards and years; it does not establish how the coaster ranks in current award or record lists.
What to check before riding
Carowinds lists a minimum height of 54 inches. Its ride page also gives safety, rider-eligibility and accessibility information, including guidance about restraints, casts, certain medical conditions, prostheses and loose articles. It notes that a test seat and alternate access information are available. Because requirements and operating guidance can change, consult the current Fury 325 ride page before visiting, especially if you have a question about eligibility or access.
The park also lists Fury 325 apparel, collectibles, toys and accessories in its merchandise collection. That establishes the category of merchandise offered by Carowinds, not the current availability of any particular item through another retailer.
