From Cocktail to Debonair: How Playboy’s Magazine Formula Was Adapted in India

Playboy’s influence in India predates Debonair: Cocktail appeared in the late 1950s, while Vinod Mehta later borrowed Playboy’s interview idea for Debonair’s distinctly broader editorial mix.

Playboy’s influence on Indian men’s magazines began before Debonair: a short-lived late-1950s title called Cocktail borrowed some of its visual cues, and Debonair later adopted selected elements of the American magazine while building a distinct editorial mix. The history is less a story of straightforward copying than of local experiments shaped by publishers, editors and Indian market expectations.

Playboy reached India before Debonair

In a 2017 retrospective for Scroll.in, journalist Aakar Patel Alikhan describes Playboy copies circulating surreptitiously in India during the 1960s. He also recounts an earlier local attempt: Cocktail, a short-lived Indian magazine that appeared in the late 1950s.

Cocktail’s selective borrowing

Alikhan says Cocktail used a strutting rooster where Playboy used its bunny, included a few foreign bikini photographs, and published writing by young Indian writers. That account is retrospective; no original issue is available here to establish its contents independently. It supports describing Cocktail as an early Indian magazine borrowing from Playboy’s visual formula, not as a proven replica or direct institutional offshoot.

The reported Nehru feature

Alikhan also notes that Playboy’s October 1963 issue carried a feature on Jawaharlal Nehru. He says the same issue clarified that it was a compilation of the prime minister’s public statements, not a conventional interview. It should therefore not be described as an in-person Playboy interview.

Was Debonair India’s Playboy?

Debonair was marketed that way, but the label describes its positioning rather than the full contents of the magazine. In his memoir, editor Vinod Mehta writes of its 1973 launch: “It was floated as a monthly ‘men’s’ magazine, which the promoters characterised as the Indian Playboy.” The publisher was Susheel Somani, owner of the G. Claridge printing press. Mehta says the venture was struggling by the end of 1973; the first issue under his editorship reached stands in April 1974.

The two dates refer to different milestones: the launch of the publishing venture and the arrival of the first issue edited by Mehta. His account appears in a memoir excerpt published by Outlook, and is valuable first-person testimony about his own role, not an audited history of the magazine’s sales or readership.

What Debonair borrowed—and what it made its own

Interview format and design references

Mehta says he deliberately borrowed Playboy’s one-to-one interview concept: “I had decided early on to lift the concept of the holding one-to-one interview from Playboy.” He also recalls using back issues of Playboy and Penthouse as design references. Those are specific editorial and visual borrowings; they do not establish that every aspect of Debonair’s format came from either magazine.

A wider editorial mix

Mehta describes a magazine that placed centerfolds alongside literature, interviews, social and cultural features, and reviews. The combination matters: Debonair’s Playboy association did not mean it consisted only of photographs. Its Indian execution brought the borrowed men’s-magazine framework together with other editorial ambitions.

Why did Debonair include nude photographs?

Mehta’s memoir says Somani required nude centerfolds as a condition of the magazine’s direction. Mehta recalls that when he tried to phase them out, sales dropped. This is his personal recollection of the publisher’s demand and the response he observed; it is not independently audited sales data or proof that all readers wanted the same thing.

Playboy’s model extended beyond the magazine

In a 1962 text, Hugh M. Hefner described Playboy as a sustained editorial identity and a wider lifestyle proposition, rather than simply a magazine format. He wrote: “In its basic concepts and its editorial attitude, in its view of itself and its view of life, its feelings about its readers and — we believe — their feelings toward it, the magazine called Playboy is the same today as it was nine years ago.” The text, hosted by Letters of Note, is Hefner’s own account of the brand, not a neutral assessment. His description also encompasses Playboy-branded products, clubs, records, tours and television—elements of an American business and lifestyle identity that should not be assumed to have transferred wholesale to Indian titles.

How the Indian market changed later

A 2006 Guardian report described Debonair and Man’s World as domestic English-language men’s-magazine options as Maxim arrived in India. It also reported that imported material was rewritten for local tastes. This is evidence about the market and adaptation debates of 2006, not a description of today’s titles or a basis for projecting the same practices onto the 1950s and 1970s.

Alikhan’s 2017 article reports Debonair circulation had fallen to 600,000 amid changing media and lifestyle trends. The article does not provide an independently audited circulation record or clearly specify the measurement year, so the figure is best treated as Alikhan’s reported number, not a verified current readership measure.

What the evidence can—and cannot—establish

  • Alikhan’s retrospective supplies the account of Cocktail, surreptitious Playboy copies and the Nehru feature; original issues were not examined to confirm those details here.
  • Mehta’s memoir provides first-person testimony about Debonair’s launch, his editorial decisions and his recollections of the centerfold policy.
  • Hefner’s 1962 text documents how Playboy described itself, not how independent observers assessed its influence.
  • The Guardian’s report captures a specific 2006 market moment, while Alikhan’s circulation figure lacks a cited audited record.
