How a BookMooch exchange works
BookMooch’s official API overview documents a three-part exchange path: add a book to your inventory, find members offering that title, then request an offer using the service’s “mooch” operation. In its API terminology, the userbook call can add a book to an inventory, wishlist, or save-for-later list, while moochable finds offers. These are technical instructions, not a guarantee that every title or feature is currently available to every member.
- List a book: Add a physical book to your inventory so other members can find it.
- Look for an offer: Search for the title and check the available listings. The API guidance suggests considering the offer’s country and the sender’s history.
- Request it: Select an offer and request the book through the exchange process.
The basic model is person-to-person rather than a guaranteed catalog: if no member has listed the book you want, there may be no offer to request.
How BookMooch points work—and what is not confirmed
BookMooch’s API documentation shows that points are associated with pending exchange transactions. A historical independent directory describes members earning points by giving books and using points to request them, but it is not reliable evidence of today’s point rates or rules. The available documentation does not establish current rates, balances, expiration rules, or whether any particular transaction earns or costs a specific number of points.

Shipping, condition, and communication
Do not assume that postage is included or that one shipping price applies everywhere. Mailing costs depend on the origin, destination, and current postal rates, and current BookMooch shipping terms have not been verified. Confirm the cost and any applicable rules before accepting or sending a request.

- Describe a book’s condition accurately so the recipient knows what to expect.
- Wrap and package it carefully to reduce the chance of damage in transit.
- Respond to requests promptly and, if mailing is delayed, tell the other member rather than leaving them waiting.
BookMooch’s community tips recommend mailing within about a week when possible. Treat that as community guidance, not a verified current deadline. The guide also reports that “at least 98% of mooches are successful.” That is a figure in BookMooch’s community tips document, not a current independently audited success rate.
Using a wishlist to find books
According to BookMooch’s community tips, members can receive an email notification when someone adds a book matching an item on their wishlist. A broader wishlist may give you more chances to find a match, but it cannot guarantee availability: another member still has to list the title.

Is BookMooch free?
The available sources do not establish current fees or all participation terms for ordinary BookMooch exchanges. Even if an exchange does not require buying a book, sending one can involve postage, and the cost varies by route and current postal rates. Confirm current costs and rules with BookMooch before participating.
