For North American cinema-goers, the biggest 2024 films depend on what “biggest” means. By domestic calendar-year box office, Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine led, while Wicked ranked third and Dune: Part Two seventh. By pre-release audience interest, IMDb ranked Dune: Part Two first and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga fifth. Those are different measures: one records ticket sales, the other online attention.
What were the biggest movies of 2024?
The table below uses domestic calendar-year grosses reported by The Numbers for 2024, rather than worldwide lifetime totals. It shows the six highest-grossing films in that source’s table and Dune: Part Two, the year’s seventh-ranked domestic title.

Which 2024 films drew the most anticipation?
In its January 4, 2024 announcement, IMDb ranked Dune: Part Two first and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga fifth among films planned for release that year. The ranking used IMDbPro MOVIEmeter data derived from page views, not ticket sales or a vote count. IMDb said its data drew on page views from more than 250 million monthly visitors worldwide.

That measure explains why Furiosa belongs in a preview of notable anticipated releases even though it does not appear among the top 14 titles shown in The Numbers’ domestic gross table. IMDb COO Nikki Santoro described the appetite for familiar worlds and new stories in the January release: “Fans are particularly excited for new chapters and reimagined versions of beloved stories and series, including Dune: Part Two, Joker: Folie à Deux, Beetlejuice 2, and Mean Girls, with new storylines like Argylle and Madame Web also poised to break out in 2024.”

When was Dune: Part Two in cinemas?
Dune: Part Two opened wide in North America on March 1, 2024. The Numbers’ schedule also lists an IMAX release on that date. Its domestic 2024 calendar-year gross was $282,709,065 in The Numbers’ table, ranking seventh; Box Office Mojo reports a different total for the same period.
For viewers following its move beyond cinemas, The Numbers lists a Warner Home Video release date of April 16, 2024. That date establishes a video release, not current stock, edition availability, price, or streaming status.

When did Furiosa come out?
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opened wide in North America on May 24, 2024, according to The Numbers’ 2024 North American release schedule. The Associated Press included it at the end of its May theatrical listings in its 2024 summer movie guide. Its presence in an anticipation-focused preview should not be mistaken for a top placement in the cited domestic gross ranking.

The leading domestic titles ranged from animated family releases to superhero films, musicals, and franchise sequels. The yearly table makes clear that a film’s prominence in previews and its eventual ticket-sales position are separate stories. Disney said its studio had brought in $5.46 billion worldwide in 2024, comprising $2.23 billion domestically and $3.23 billion internationally; this is the company’s own studio-reported total, not an independent industry-wide statistic. The company described the result while releases were still active, so its statement should be read in that context.
