Jewish actresses became prominent in Indian cinema when social convention kept many other women off the stage and screen. Stars such as Sulochana and Pramila crossed that boundary, helped define the modern screen woman, and worked through cinema’s shift from silent films to talkies. Their stories are significant, but they represent particular communities and careers—not a census of Indian film stars.
Who were the Jewish women in early Indian cinema?
Many of the best-documented actresses were from Baghdadi Jewish families, with others from the Bene Israel community. Screen names could obscure family backgrounds, and some identities remain disputed, so it is more accurate to describe particular documented performers than to treat “Jewish actresses” as a single, uniform group.
- Sulochana was Ruby Myers, a Baghdadi Jewish actress from Pune and a major silent-era star.
- Pramila was Esther Victoria Abraham, an actress and film producer. Her sister Romila, also known as Sophie Abraham, acted, as did their cousin Rose, or Rose Musleah.
- Nadira became known for later Hindi-film roles, including the vamp persona. Sources differ on expanded birth-name details, so Nadira is the clearest name to use here.
- Firoza Begum, also known as Susan Solomon, is named among early Jewish actresses. Other performers documented in accounts of the period include Lillian Ezra and Arati Devi, or Rachel Sofaer.
These examples do not amount to a complete filmography. The careers and identities of some performers are harder to establish than others, and the surviving record is scattered.
Why did Jewish women become visible on screen?
In early Indian theatre, female roles were often played by men; respectable women were not generally expected to perform in public. Baghdadi Jewish women’s education and participation in professional life formed part of the circumstances that made careers in cinema possible for some of them. That context helps explain their visibility, but it is not a single-cause explanation, and public performance was not universally accepted within their communities.

The screen also offered roles for women shown working, making choices, moving through public spaces, and changing their appearance across social settings. In Wildcat of Bombay, Sulochana reportedly played eight characters, from a Hyderabadi gentleman to a European blonde. She and Pramila also had production companies, making their work more than a story of acting alone.
As scholar Priti Ramamurthy puts it, “racial differentiation was both the condition for women to enter a disreputable profession and the condition for reworking it.” The observation points to a tension: a perceived difference could open a path into film work while also shaping how actresses and their characters were understood.

What changed when Indian cinema began making talkies?
The arrival of sound changed what a screen career required. Performers who did not speak Hindi fluently could face a barrier when dialogue replaced silent storytelling. Accounts of the period describe many silent-era actresses as unable to sustain their earlier success in Hindi talkies, but the outcomes were not identical for everyone. Sulochana, for example, continued into the sound era.
Talkies also altered the stories and ideals attached to women on screen. In remakes of Sulochana’s silent films, the emphasis could shift toward norms of Hindu womanhood. Later, actresses such as Pramila and Nadira became associated with the “vamp”: a modern or sexually assertive woman positioned against an idealized Indian wife or mother. These parts offered visibility, but they could also confine Jewish actresses to a narrow contrast within nationalist storytelling.

What can—and can’t—these careers tell us?
The history is not interchangeable across Jewish communities. Baghdadi Jews, Bene Israel, and Cochini Jews had distinct histories and circumstances; the latter community was more geographically distant from Bombay and Calcutta, the film centers discussed in accounts of this period. Nor should a handful of prominent actresses be taken to represent every Jewish performer or the full range of women’s work in Indian cinema.
Archival gaps matter. A current Ohio State research description notes that these histories must be reconstructed from scattered materials including oral histories, family albums, studio photographs, film ephemera, and surviving films. That makes careful attribution important: the record supports the prominence of figures such as Sulochana and Pramila, but it does not settle every claimed ancestry or provide a definitive account of every career.
