A section of the ceiling at Cinema Ocho in La Plata, Argentina, collapsed during a May 19, 2025 screening of Final Destination: Bloodlines. News reports identified attendee Fiamma Villaverde as having been struck by debris and bruised. The reported coincidence with the film’s fictional accidents drew attention, but the collapse was a real theater incident—not an event caused by or depicted as fact in the movie.
What happened at Cinema Ocho
The collapse occurred toward the end of a screening in La Plata, in Buenos Aires Province. TheWrap reported the incident on May 25, citing Argentine outlet Infobae; The Independent published an account the next day. The Independent identified the attendee hit by debris as 29-year-old Fiamma Villaverde.

Villaverde told The Independent that a loud noise first seemed like part of the movie because she and the others were absorbed in it. She then said a large piece fell on her. The Daily Beast reported that she had attended with her 11-year-old daughter and a friend for her birthday, and quoted her saying, “I went because it was my birthday, and look what happened to me.”
Reported injuries and aftermath
The Independent reported that Villaverde sustained bruises, went to hospital and was asked to return for another X-ray of her back. It also reported her account that she missed several days of work and planned to complain about the theater. The Daily Beast likewise reported bruising, anxiety, missed work and her plan to file a complaint. These details are accounts attributed to Villaverde and the outlets, not independently reviewed medical or legal findings.

TheWrap reported that no one was seriously injured. Its May 25 report said the theater had not responded to its requests for comment as of that publication date; that does not establish the venue’s position now.
Why the collapse happened is not established
TheWrap relayed that recent rain was believed to have left the roof vulnerable. That was reported as a possible contributing factor, not a confirmed cause. The reviewed reporting does not establish an official inspection or investigation conclusion, a later venue response, or the outcome of Villaverde’s planned complaint.

Viral images of other collapses are not from La Plata
Images and video shared as if they showed Cinema Ocho have been misidentified. AFP Fact Check traced a widely circulated video of water leaking through a cinema ceiling to a 2015 ceiling collapse at Ayala Center Cebu in the Philippines, where six people were reported hurt. AFP traced a damaged-theater image to a separate collapse at the Liberty Theater in Wenatchee, Washington, in February 2025. A Wenatchee Valley Firefighters account cited by AFP said two people were inside and no injuries were reported; the cause was under investigation at that time. Neither visual documents the La Plata incident.

The office lists Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein as directors and a runtime of 109 minutes. Warner Bros. says the film’s worldwide theatrical and IMAX release began internationally on May 14, 2025, with its nationwide U.S. release on May 16.

The screening and the movie’s fictional premise explain the unsettling coincidence, but they do not change what is known about the incident: reporting describes a ceiling collapse, debris striking an attendee and bruising. It does not establish that the film had any connection to the physical failure or confirm the cause.
