The Fantastic Four: First Steps places Marvel’s First Family in a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world—and its trailer campaign makes that period feel central to the film’s identity. The Silver Age connection is more than a visual impression: director Matt Shakman described the heroes as figures on whom Marvel’s Silver Age was built.
What the trailer promises about the film’s world
Marvel describes The Fantastic Four: First Steps as set in “a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world.” Its official film page introduces Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm as Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and The Thing, respectively. Marvel’s film page supplies the studio’s clearest framing of the setting.
Disney’s official movie page uses the same description and identifies the lead cast as Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Disney Movies therefore reinforces that the 1960s influence is part of the film’s stated premise, not simply an interpretation of the trailer’s look.
How the campaign links the First Family to the Silver Age
Disney UK’s announcement for the all-new trailer and poster says the campaign showcases the First Family, Silver Surfer and H.E.R.B.I.E., alongside the film’s “retro-futuristic 1960s vibe.” That gives viewers a useful guide to the campaign’s emphasis: the team and its supporting figures are presented within a consciously period-inspired world. Disney UK’s trailer announcement describes the overall focus, rather than cataloguing particular images or comic references.

The director’s stated Silver Age connection
In an April 29, 2025 report, the Associated Press quoted director Matt Shakman saying: “They are the legendary heroes of the ’60s that the Marvel silver age was built on.” This is the clearest direct link between the movie’s period setting and the team’s place in Marvel history. The attribution matters: Shakman is describing the heroes’ significance, not claiming that a particular trailer shot reproduces a specific comic panel. The Associated Press report provides the statement and its context.
What viewers can—and cannot—read into the trailer
The official descriptions support calling the film 1960s-inspired and retro-futuristic, while Shakman’s reported comment supports its deliberate connection to the Silver Age. The available official material does not provide a shot-by-shot explanation or identify individual comic panels as references. Viewers can recognize the broad historical and stylistic framing without treating every visual detail as a confirmed adaptation of a particular issue.
Trailer label and release-date context
Disney Video labels its asset “The Fantastic Four: First Steps | Official Trailer | Only in Theaters July 25.” That July 25 wording is a historical theatrical release-date label, not an announcement that the film is still forthcoming. Disney Video’s official trailer page identifies the asset and preserves the campaign wording.

Marvel Japan documents a physical 4K UHD and Blu-ray edition of the film. That establishes that such a release exists in that market, but it does not establish local stock, price, region compatibility or suitability for a player in another country. Check the listing for your territory and confirm its format and region details before buying.
