The Associated Press reported a $40 million weekend gross, down 66% from the film’s $117.6 million debut. A separate chart source recorded a slightly lower gross and a 67% decline, so the figures depend on the source.
How steep was the second-weekend drop?
For August 1–3, 2025, the Associated Press reported that The Fantastic Four: First Steps earned $40 million in 4,125 North American theaters, a 66% decrease from its $117.6 million North American opening weekend. The AP said the film remained No. 1. The Associated Press’s August 3 report described the second-weekend result.

The Numbers’ domestic weekend chart gives a nearby but different estimate: $38,695,752 for August 1–3, down 67%, with a cumulative domestic gross of $197,123,387. These are separate source figures, not interchangeable exact totals. The Numbers’ August 1 weekend chart lists its figures.
What was competing for moviegoers?
Two new comedies took the next positions on The Numbers’ August 1–3 domestic chart. The Bad Guys 2 earned $21,995,715, while The Naked Gun earned $16,805,560. The AP rounded their grosses to $22 million and $17 million, respectively.

The grosses and positions in the table are from The Numbers’ domestic chart. The releases provide context for a busy weekend, but the available reporting does not establish that either comedy caused Fantastic Four’s decline.
How did the drop compare with the film’s opening?
The film began with a strong opening. Disney reported $118 million domestically and $100 million internationally over the July 25–27 weekend, or $218 million combined. The AP separately described the North American debut as $117.6 million. The figures are reported with different rounding and by different sources; the combined Disney total should not be mistaken for a domestic-only gross. Disney’s July 27 announcement gives its opening-weekend figures.
The second-weekend decline is striking against that debut, but a percentage drop and a chart position measure different things: the former tracks change from the previous weekend, while the latter ranks a film against releases playing at the same time. Fantastic Four could fall substantially and still lead the chart because its competitors’ grosses were lower.

What did the later chart show?
By August 15–17, the film was fourth on Box Office Mojo’s domestic weekend chart, with $9,030,672 for that weekend, down 42.8%. Its cumulative domestic gross on that chart was $247,268,221. Weapons, Freakier Friday, and Nobody 2 ranked above it. These are the figures listed for that weekend by Box Office Mojo’s Domestic 2025 Weekend 33 chart.
What the decline does—and does not—say
The AP quoted Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian as saying the drop was surprising given the film’s strong reviews. That is an analyst’s assessment, not a measurement of audience response, and it does not identify a cause for the decline. The weekend chart shows that new releases were present; it cannot by itself show how much they affected Fantastic Four’s attendance.
