Some social-media users criticized Carrie Underwood after she was announced as a performer at Donald Trump’s January 20, 2025, inauguration. The comments show visible opposition to her participation, but they do not establish how many of her fans objected—or whether the backlash changed her audience or career.
What was Carrie Underwood announced to perform?
The Associated Press reported on January 13, 2025, that Underwood would sing “America the Beautiful” shortly before Trump took the oath of office. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies’ official record lists her as a performer at the 60th inaugural ceremony on January 20.

How did Underwood explain her decision?
In a statement reported by the Associated Press, Underwood said: “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event.” She added: “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”

That was Underwood’s stated rationale for accepting the invitation. It describes how she framed her participation; by itself, it does not establish a position on any particular Trump policy.
What criticism did the announcement draw?
The Independent reported critical comments on Underwood’s Instagram after the announcement. One commenter wrote, “So gross that you’re supporting Trump!” The remark illustrates how some people interpreted her appearance—as support for the president-elect—but it is one reported comment, not a measure of opinion among her fans.

Does the backlash show that most of her fans objected?
No. The reporting documents negative online comments, but it does not provide a representative survey or other measure of how Underwood’s audience felt. The comments also do not verify whether their writers were fans. They establish that the decision drew criticism—not how widespread that criticism was.

Nor do the cited reports establish that listeners stopped streaming her music, that sales changed, or that her career was affected. Those outcomes should not be inferred from a set of social-media reactions.
Does performing at an inauguration mean endorsing the administration?
An inaugural performance is a public act at a politically significant ceremony, so observers may read participation as meaningful. Critics did interpret Underwood’s appearance as support for Trump. But performing at the event, on its own, does not prove endorsement of every policy or position of the incoming administration. The Associated Press placed Underwood among the entertainers involved in the 2025 inaugural events and noted a contrast with the celebrity landscape at Trump’s 2017 inauguration; that context does not establish the political views of every performer.
