Elton John has said he lost sight in his right eye after a severe eye infection in 2024; he has not said that he lost the eye itself. He has also described poor vision in his left eye. In his latest detailed account, in November 2025, his husband David Furnish reported some improvement in the left eye with treatments, but neither gave a definite prognosis. Reports in 2026 show the vision problems continued to affect John’s songwriting, not that his sight had been restored.
What happened to Elton John’s eyesight?
On September 3, 2024, John said a severe eye infection had left him with “only limited vision in one eye” and that recovery was extremely slow. His statement, reported by ABC News, did not identify which eye was affected.

In an Associated Press interview the following November, John clarified that he had lost eyesight in his right eye “for the time being” and that his left eye was “not the greatest.” He said he and his team were looking into treatment. This was a report of sight loss, not removal or loss of the right eye.
What has he said about his left eye and possible recovery?
At the London opening of The Devil Wears Prada on December 1, 2024, John said he had lost his eyesight and that it was hard to see the show. That brief public remark did not provide a new clinical assessment or prognosis.
#1 Best Overall
In a Variety interview published November 26, 2025, John described the preceding 15 months as challenging and said he had been unable to see, watch, or read. Furnish said treatments had brought some improvement in John’s left eye and that a large computer screen enabled him to read a little. John expressed hope that science might help, but neither he nor Furnish said whether sight would return in his right eye or gave a definitive prognosis. Their comments describe their experience and expectations, not an independent medical assessment.

John’s vision problems have affected how he works. In remarks reported after the Glenn Gould Prize event in May 2026, he said he had finished his next album and described reversing his usual writing process: “I’m writing melodies first, and lyrics coming second. I’ve never done that.” The account was published by iHeart.
