No. The “Elon” in Wernher von Braun’s The Mars Project is reported to be a title for an elected Martian leader, not a person named Elon or a prediction about Elon Musk. The German edition appeared in 1952; its English edition followed in 1953, which explains why a 2021 headline called it 69 years old.
What the book says about “Elon”
A December 2020 social-media post claimed that von Braun’s 1953 book referred to a person named Elon who would bring humans to Mars. Elon Musk responded, “Are we sure this is real?” Futurism’s account of the exchange says the claim misread the word: in the reported passage, “Elon” is a title for a leader on Mars, not the name of an individual identified as Musk or as a foretold person. Futurism reported the claim and correction in 2021.

That distinction matters: a shared word is not evidence that the book predicted a real person. The exact passage has not been verified here against a copy of the book, so this explanation is attributed to Futurism rather than presented as a direct quotation from von Braun’s text.
Which book—and which publication year?
The work at issue is The Mars Project, von Braun’s technical study of the problems and possibilities of a proposed expedition to Mars. The University of Illinois Press identifies 1953 as its first publication year, while Google Books and NASA’s historical account say the German edition appeared in 1952 and the English edition in 1953. Thus, “69-year-old” was accurate for the 2021 headline only when counted from the 1952 German edition; the English edition was 68 years old that year.

| Work or edition | What it is | Publication detail |
|---|---|---|
| The Mars Project (German edition) | Technical study of a projected Mars expedition | Published in Germany in 1952, according to NASA’s historical account and Google Books. |
| The Mars Project (English edition) | English translation of the technical study | Published in 1953; the University of Illinois Press lists that as the first publication year. The Google Books record describes a 91-page edition. University of Illinois Press; Google Books. |
| Project Mars: A Technical Tale | A separate science-fiction novel, not the technical study | It is a distinct work; the sources cited here do not establish a publication year for it. |
The similar titles help explain how retellings can blur the technical study with Project Mars: A Technical Tale. They are not interchangeable, and the viral claim should not be presented as though a 1953 novel named a future person called Elon. NASA’s account distinguishes the technical study’s publication history; Futurism also flags the separate novel in discussing the confusion.

Von Braun’s career needs its wartime context. NASA’s biography describes him as the leader of the V-2 rocket team for Nazi Germany, brought to the United States under Project Paperclip after the war. He later directed NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and became a chief architect of the Saturn V rocket. NASA’s biography of Wernher von Braun documents both the Nazi-era program and his later American spaceflight career.
