There is no official personality ranking of the Hashira. This list ranks the nine major Hashira characters by warmth and kindness, emotional openness, how they treat allies, and whether their motives complicate an abrasive first impression. It includes former Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku and Tengen Uzui, not just the currently serving roster. Hashira are the Demon Slayer Corps’ highest-ranking swordsmen; this ordering is an interpretation of their character, not a measure of strength, popularity, or combat skill.
Spoiler warning: The rankings draw on character revelations and events across the story, including later arcs.
How this personality ranking works
The official character profiles name the Hashira and sometimes describe a trait, but they do not rank them by likability. Where those profiles are explicit, their wording is useful evidence; where they are silent, the ranking relies on how the characters behave in the story. The same four considerations apply to everyone: kindness, emotional openness, treatment of allies, and the contrast between outward demeanor and underlying motives.
The order favors characters whose warmth and care are readily visible, while still giving credit to people whose harshness masks loyalty or pain. A reserved or difficult personality is not automatically unkind. The manga is the source material for readers who want the full context; the official character pages credit Koyoharu Gotoge and SHUEISHA alongside Aniplex and ufotable.

Every major Hashira, ranked by personality
-
Gyomei Himejima — Stone Hashira
Gyomei ranks first for compassion that is both deep and steady. The official Hashira Training profile says he “Has a strong feeling of compassion for others and cries as he chants the nenbutsu.” His tears might make him seem fragile at a glance, but they reflect an openly tender response to suffering. His strength as a Corps member is a separate matter from the qualities that put him at the top here.
Gyomei’s emotional openness is unusually plain: he does not hide how strongly he feels. Among the Hashira, that visible empathy makes him the clearest choice for the kindest overall.
-
Mitsuri Kanroji — Love Hashira
Mitsuri’s warmth is immediate rather than guarded. Her official profile describes her as having a “bright and cheerful personality,” a rare direct personality assessment on the official pages. She meets people with affection and enthusiasm, making kindness a defining feature rather than a quality readers must infer from a hard exterior.
She places just below Gyomei because his compassion is framed as a profound concern for others, while Mitsuri’s strongest first impression is buoyant openness. Both rank near the top for how little distance they put between their feelings and the people around them.

Kyojuro Rengoku — Flame Hashira
Rengoku’s confidence is paired with an earnest sense of responsibility. In the story, he encourages others, takes his obligations seriously, and treats protecting people as a moral duty. His enthusiasm can be overwhelming, but it is generous rather than self-serving: he directs his energy toward reassuring and helping others.

- Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaib
He is a former Hashira, included because this list covers the major Hashira characters across the story rather than only those currently serving. His official profiles reviewed here do not provide a direct personality description, so this placement rests on his conduct in the narrative.
-
Tengen Uzui — Former Sound Hashira
Tengen’s flamboyant confidence can make him seem self-absorbed, but his theatrical presentation is not the whole of his character. The official Entertainment District profile says, “Though he is a former Shinobi, he is fond of flashy things.” That describes his taste and presentation; the more telling personality evidence is his loyalty and protective concern for his allies.
His showmanship keeps him below the Hashira whose warmth is more immediately evident. He is retired after losing his left eye and left arm in the Entertainment District battle, though the official Infinity Castle profile says he remains active in the Corps.

Giyu Tomioka — Water Hashira
Giyu is reserved enough to be mistaken for cold. The official Hashira Training profile calls him a “reticent swordsman,” and the Infinity Castle profile adds that he believed himself unworthy of being a Hashira, carrying the memory of hopes his friend Sabito had placed in him. His silence is closely tied to self-doubt and grief, not proof that he lacks concern for others.
Giyu’s kindness often appears through action rather than emotional reassurance. That reserve places him below the more openly affectionate Hashira, but it should not be confused with indifference.

Shinobu Kocho — Insect Hashira
Shinobu’s controlled manner makes her one of the hardest Hashira to read. Her official profile emphasizes her medical knowledge and specialized poison, not a personality verdict. In the story, a calm smile and sharp wit can sit alongside anger and grief, creating a deliberate gap between outward composure and inner feeling.
Her care for others is real, but it is less straightforwardly expressed than Gyomei’s or Mitsuri’s. This ranking gives her credit for that care while recognizing that her teasing, pointed manner can feel less welcoming to allies.

Muichiro Tokito — Mist Hashira
Muichiro can initially seem distant and inattentive. The official profiles reviewed here identify him as a Hashira and note his rapid rise, but offer little explicit judgment of his personality. His placement therefore depends on story behavior: his apparent detachment is not the same as cruelty, and his capacity to reconnect with others becomes clearer as his circumstances change.
He ranks below Shinobu because his early emotional distance makes his concern harder to see, even when it is present. His reserve is best understood as a feature of his character and circumstances, not a simple measure of his kindness.
-
Obanai Iguro — Serpent Hashira
Obanai’s loyalty and intense feelings are unmistakable, but they often come wrapped in suspicion and severity. The official profiles identify his Hashira title, bandages, and snake companion without offering much personality analysis. His rank here comes from the narrative: he can be harsh toward others, and his care is more selective and tightly guarded than the warmth of those above him.

Sanemi Shinazugawa — Wind Hashira
Sanemi ranks last for the abrasive way he handles relationships, not because the official profile labels him generally hostile. It says he “Shows more hostility towards evil demons than others”—a specific description of his stance toward evil demons, not a blanket judgment about how he treats allies. In the story, however, his interactions with other people can be confrontational and frightening.
His harshness has protective motives and is shaped by pain, which makes him more complicated than a simple antagonist. But when the standard is warmth, openness, and day-to-day treatment of allies, those qualities are harder to see than they are in the other Hashira.
Who is the kindest or most likable Hashira?
Gyomei is the strongest answer for kindness if compassion is the deciding measure: his official profile explicitly emphasizes it. Mitsuri is the clearest answer for an openly cheerful, affectionate personality, also directly supported by her profile. “Most likable” is more subjective: readers who value warmth may favor either of them, while someone who prefers quiet loyalty may connect more with Giyu. None of those preferences changes the fact that the official series material supplies no objective personality order.
What the ranking does—and does not—measure
- It measures: how readily a character shows kindness, shares emotion, treats allies, and reveals protective motives beneath their manner.
- It does not measure: combat ability, rank within the Corps, screen time, visual design, or a surveyed audience’s popularity.
- It includes: major Hashira across the story, including former Hashira Rengoku and retired former Sound Hashira Tengen, rather than only the current roster.
Official profiles provide the clearest direct personality anchors for Mitsuri and Gyomei, and a useful qualification for Sanemi’s hostility. For the remaining characters, the ranking is a reading of their story behavior, not an official verdict.
