That is an editorial ranking, not an objective verdict: it weighs performance, characterization, range and consistency, fit with each era, and the films that gave each actor room to work.
The scope matters. This list compares the six principal EON-era Bonds named by the official James Bond site. A broader screen-history list would also include Barry Nelson, who played Bond in the 1954 television adaptation of Casino Royale, and David Niven, who played him in the 1967 non-EON film Casino Royale. Connery also returned as Bond in the non-EON 1983 film Never Say Never Again. Those are distinct cases, not additional principal EON actors.
How this Bond ranking works
There is no neutral way to rank performances from different decades, with different scripts and different ideas of what Bond should be. This list uses five considerations: the actor’s command of the role; the distinctiveness and credibility of the characterization; consistency and range across the Bond films available to judge; how well the portrayal fits its era and contributes to the character’s evolution; and how much the films themselves allow the performance to show. Film quality informs the judgment, but it is not a substitute for acting quality.
Appearances are not points: a longer run supplies more evidence, but it does not automatically produce a higher position. That matters especially when comparing a one-film portrayal with an actor’s several-film body of work. Statistical comparisons can produce different orders depending on the measures selected; a 2019 ranking published in an American Statistical Association magazine is one example of a method-dependent approach, not a definitive answer.
#1 Best Overall
The six principal EON James Bond actors, ranked
-
Sean Connery
Connery is the strongest overall choice because he established a compelling reference point for the cinematic Bond: controlled authority, danger and a dry edge in one recognizable screen presence. His performance makes the character feel self-possessed without reducing him to a collection of mannerisms. Ranking him first does not mean later actors should be judged by how closely they imitate him; the job is to create a convincing Bond for a different film and a different era.
-
Daniel Craig
Craig ranks second for the depth and range of his characterization across a five-film run. His Bond can carry vulnerability and emotional weight as well as command, giving the modern films a version of the character that is more exposed without losing his defining authority. The length of the run offers a substantial sample, although the films’ changing tones make consistency a question of how successfully the portrayal develops, not whether every installment feels alike.

-
Timothy Dalton
Dalton’s two-film portrayal earns third for its focused characterization and strong fit with its era. He gives the role a seriousness that distinguishes his Bond from both the more playful and more stoic interpretations around it. Two films provide less evidence of long-run range than the larger bodies of work above him, so this position rests on the force and coherence of the portrayal rather than a claim that a short run proves greater career-long consistency.
-
Roger Moore
Moore ranks fourth, with a broad body of work that makes his approach easy to assess across time. His particular strength is making a lighter, more comic Bond feel like a deliberate interpretation rather than a failed attempt at someone else’s. The official chronology describes a seven-film, twelve-year run, a wider consistency test than a single-film appearance. The same ease and comic timing that define the portrayal can also make it less dramatically forceful than the performances ranked above.

-
George Lazenby
Lazenby’s single principal EON appearance makes him the hardest actor to place: one film cannot show the range or consistency available in a multi-film run. That is a limit on the evidence, not proof that the performance is weak. His position reflects the narrower sample and the difficulty of evaluating a Bond characterization without a second film to develop or challenge it.
-
Pierce Brosnan
Brosnan’s four-film run gives him room to display polish and command, but the portrayal’s shifts in tone make it less cohesive in this ranking than the entries above. His Bond can be persuasive as a suave, capable figure; the harder question is how distinctive and consistent that characterization remains across the run. He finishes sixth here not because appearances or popularity settle the issue, but because the overall performance and its changing film context make a less compelling unified portrayal by these criteria.

What audiences said in a 2023 U.S. survey
A YouGov survey asked, “In your opinion, which of the following actors has been the best James Bond?” Among 1,000 U.S. adult citizens interviewed April 28–May 2, 2023, Connery led the listed actors. The results are useful as a dated snapshot of U.S. opinion, not as a global or current consensus. The actor-response table had an unweighted N of 999; displayed percentages total 101% because of rounding.
| Actor or response | Share |
|---|---|
| Sean Connery | 36% |
| Roger Moore | 13% |
| Daniel Craig | 13% |
| Pierce Brosnan | 10% |
| George Lazenby | 4% |
| Timothy Dalton | 3% |
| Not sure | 22% |
The poll’s order differs from this article’s in important places, which is exactly why a fan-preference question and a performance ranking should not be treated as the same exercise.

How to compare the actors for yourself
Watching the films in sequence makes it easier to separate an actor’s choices from the expectations of the period. The official James Bond site’s production chronology tracks the principal actors’ Bond histories, including production beginnings rather than simply release dates. A direct comparison is best made across films that give each performer a fair chance to establish the characterization; the official film history is a starting point for selecting them. For a physical-media option, look for a James Bond film collection or Bond films on Blu-ray, checking the exact edition and availability with the seller.
