Paramount+’s official cast guide identifies T.L. as Tommy’s father. The relationship is estranged: T.L. comes home to Tommy, and their reunion is a central personal thread in the season.
Why is T.L.’s return important to Tommy’s story?
T.L.’s presence gives the series a way to reveal more about the past behind Tommy’s hard-edged persona. In a Fort Worth Star-Telegram interview published November 10, 2025, and updated November 12, Thornton said, “I thought it was brilliant to now have the father come in, and you see where this cat came from.” That describes Thornton’s view of the storytelling purpose: the character’s arrival helps put Tommy’s background in context.

Thornton also described the father and son as starting the season with a “very fractured relationship.” Their story is about what happens as they try to mend it—or fail to. The reconciliation is not presented as settled from the outset; the tension is part of the relationship the season explores.
What did Sam Elliott and Billy Bob Thornton say about the casting?
Elliott had worked with Landman creator Taylor Sheridan on 1883. Speaking to TheWrap on the Season 2 premiere date, November 16, 2025, Elliott said the new role offered another opportunity to work with Sheridan. In the Star-Telegram interview, he recalled Sheridan calling to ask what he was doing and joking that Sheridan had “spoiled me for writing ‘1883’” before telling him he would put him back to work.

Thornton’s comments frame Elliott’s casting as a story decision as well as a notable reunion between actors and creator. Elliott’s T.L. is not simply a new figure in Tommy’s orbit; he is the parent whose return puts the character’s family past directly in front of him.
