Emma Watson later said she had a childhood crush on Tom Felton while they were filming the Harry Potter movies. That recollection does not establish that the two actors dated—or that a particular behind-the-scenes clip shows them flirting. Felton said in their 2021 reunion interview that nothing romantic happened between them.
What the behind-the-scenes clip does—and does not—show
Entertainment Tonight’s 2019 retrospective describes an on-set video Felton posted in September of that year. In it, Watson and Felton play a game while dressed in character; Watson later replied that she went on to win. That account does not establish that this is the specific clip sometimes described as the pair flirting, nor does it verify a flirtatious interpretation of their gestures. Without confirming the footage itself, it is more accurate to call it a game between co-stars than evidence of romance. Entertainment Tonight’s 2019 account
When Watson first spoke publicly about the crush
The story was public years before the 2021 Harry Potter reunion. In a 2011 report, the Los Angeles Times quoted Watson saying Felton was her first crush while they were making the first two films. She said, “He totally knows. We talked about it — we still laugh about it. We are really good friends now, and that’s cool.” The report placed her at age 11 during that period. Los Angeles Times, June 29, 2011
Watson elaborated during a 2012 appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, as recounted by ET. She said the crush lasted roughly from ages 10 to 12 and called it “a really terrible crush.” Her explanation was that Felton was older, played a “bad guy,” and had a skateboard: “He used to do tricks on it. He was so cool.” She said he knew about her feelings and regarded her as a younger sister. Entertainment Tonight’s account of Watson’s 2012 comments

What Watson remembered in the 2021 reunion
In Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, Watson recalled a tutoring session on set. She saw a drawing Felton had made and later described that as the moment her feelings began: “And I just don’t know how to say it — I just fell in love with him.” She also remembered looking for his name on the call sheet. These are Watson’s retrospective memories, shared in the reunion interview—not comments made during the original filming. Vanity Fair’s report on the reunion interview
What Felton said about their relationship
Felton recalled learning that Watson had a crush on him and said, “I became very protective over her.” He described their bond as a lasting “kinship” and said he had “always had a soft spot for her.” He also made the distinction that matters when reading the story: “nothing romantic ever happened” between them. The accounts describe Watson’s childhood crush and a close friendship, not a relationship. Vanity Fair’s report on Felton’s reunion comments

Why the story is often retold
Watson’s own descriptions give the anecdote its charm: a child actor developing a crush on an older co-star she thought was cool, while he understood their connection as friendship. The later reunion let both actors reflect on that memory, but it did not turn the crush into a romance. A clip of them playing together on set may be enjoyable fan footage; on the evidence available here, it should not be presented as proof that they flirted or dated.
