New images from the film adaptation of Wicked feature Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda, who later goes by Glinda. Director Jon M. Chu’s discussion of the film’s “Dancing Through Life” and Ozdust Ballroom sequences offers context for the scenes behind the pictures.
What the new Wicked images show
A brief Collidere report, published September 19, 2024, identifies the pictured performers as Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s Galinda, also known as Glinda. The images belong to the two-part feature-film adaptation of the Broadway musical, which follows the unlikely friendship that develops between the two students.

“Dancing Through Life” at Shiz
In an interview published by Entertainment Weekly and republished by Yahoo Entertainment on September 19, 2024, director Jon M. Chu discussed the “Dancing Through Life” sequence at Shiz University. The number begins with Fiyero, and students dance in the library. Chu said the sequence helps establish relationships among the characters.
How the film reimagines the Ozdust Ballroom
Chu also spoke about the Ozdust Ballroom sequence, describing the film’s staging as distinct from the stage production: “Our conception of the Ozdust is very different than what we’ve seen on stage.” The comment points to an adaptation choice rather than a scene-by-scene reproduction; the interview provides this specific comparison but does not establish further details about how the staging differs.

The story behind the musical
The Broadway musical that the films adapt was inspired by Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Maguire’s book is a starting point for readers who want to explore the story’s literary origins. The film and musical share that source, but the available interview does not make the novel itself the focus of the pictured scenes.
