The immediate trigger was Lamar’s rejection of the “Big Three” framing associated with Drake and J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter.” The battle’s songs traded serious accusations and denials, but lyrics are claims by the artists—not independent proof. In 2025, Drake sued their shared label, UMG, over “Not Like Us”; a judge dismissed the case, and Drake filed an appeal.
How the rivalry began
Collaboration came first
The two artists were not always open rivals. Their early musical connection included Drake’s “Buried Alive Interlude,” Lamar’s “Poetic Justice,” and A$AP Rocky’s “Problems.” Their later conflict is better understood as a long-running mix of collaboration and competition than as an uninterrupted feud from the start. Competitive references, 2013–2023
In 2013, Lamar’s verse on Big Sean’s “Control” named Drake among several rappers he challenged. Drake responded publicly, and Lamar took another jab at the 2013 BET Hip-Hop Awards. References and tensions continued intermittently over the following years, but not every lyric or remark from that period can be confidently identified as a shot at the other artist. What set off the 2024 battle?
In October 2023, Drake and J. Cole released “First Person Shooter,” which invoked the question of who ranked at the top among Cole, Drake, and Lamar. Lamar answered in March 2024 on “Like That,” a track by Future and Metro Boomin, rejecting the “Big Three” framing. That verse sparked the concentrated public exchange. The diss-track timeline
The releases came in quick succession from April through May 2024. The table identifies the sequence and broad role of each group of tracks; it does not treat the artists’ accusations as verified facts.
| Release phase | Track(s) | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Drake’s opening responses | “Push Ups” and “Taylor Made Freestyle” | Drake responded to Lamar’s challenge with diss tracks and personal attacks. |
| Lamar’s replies | “Euphoria,” “6:16 in LA,” “Meet the Grahams,” and “Not Like Us” | Lamar escalated with criticism and allegations aimed at Drake. |
| Drake’s response | “The Heart Part 6” | Drake answered Lamar’s accusations with counterclaims and denials. |
The songs contain insults, allegations, rebuttals, and denials. A diss track is one participant’s perspective: an allegation in a lyric should not be presented as established fact without independent evidence. What is verified—and what remains an allegation?
The public record establishes that the songs were released and that the artists exchanged accusations. It does not make every claim in those lyrics true. AP cautioned that diss tracks can mix exaggerated truths with unsubstantiated rumors. The responsible way to describe the battle is to attribute accusations to the artist or track that made them, and distinguish those statements from independently verified information. Was the shooting outside Drake’s home caused by the feud?
A security guard was shot outside Drake’s Toronto home during the May 2024 exchange. Contemporaneous reporting said police had not stated that the shooting was caused by the feud. The timing alone does not establish a connection. Associated Press report

What happened with Drake’s lawsuit over “Not Like Us”?
In 2025, Drake sued UMG, the artists’ shared label, over the release and promotion of “Not Like Us.” The case was against UMG, not Lamar. On October 9, 2025, U.S. District Judge Jeannette A. Vargas dismissed Drake’s claims, concluding that the challenged statements were nonactionable opinion in the context of a heated rap battle. The opinion described the case as arising from “perhaps the most infamous rap battle in the genre’s history,” and stated: “Because the Court concludes that the allegedly defamatory statements in ‘Not Like Us’ are nonactionable opinion, the motion to dismiss is GRANTED.” This was a ruling about whether the statements could support the claims at issue—not a finding that the song’s allegations were true. District court opinion, October 9, 2025
Drake filed a notice of appeal in the Second Circuit in October 2025. The appellate docket information available here shows filings through February 2, 2026, and does not establish the appeal’s status as of October 8, 2026. Second Circuit docket listing
