Which casinos were part of Trump’s Atlantic City portfolio?
The Trump Organization’s retrospective timeline dates its Atlantic City ventures to 1984, 1985 and 1990. The names and company arrangements changed over time, so the 1985 entry needs context: the House Judiciary Committee’s 2020 background memorandum describes that property as Trump Castle, later renamed Trump Marina.

Why did the Taj Mahal become a financial strain?
Expensive construction and borrowing
The Taj Mahal’s financing was a central pressure point. The 2020 House Judiciary Committee memorandum says Trump’s casino company issued $675 million in junk bonds at 14 percent to complete the project, and that the Taj’s debt exceeded $820 million. These are figures reported in the committee memorandum’s account of the historical reporting it cites.

Before the casino opened, casino analyst Marvin B. Roffman warned, “The market just isn’t there,” as quoted in the committee memorandum from reporting by The Wall Street Journal. W. Bucky Howard, who was promoted to Taj president shortly after opening, later recalled: “I told him it was going to fail. The Taj was underfunded.” The committee memorandum attributes the remarks to interviews; they are contemporaneous or retrospective assessments, not a complete accounting of the property’s performance.
Competition and the wider market
The Taj’s arrival also coincided with pressure on the other Trump casinos. The committee memorandum reports that combined gambling revenues at Trump Castle and Trump Plaza fell by $58 million in the Taj’s opening year, while Atlantic City gambling revenues overall rose just 1.35 percent in 1990 amid a national recession. Those comparisons point to a difficult setting and possible competition among properties, but they do not establish that any single factor caused the later financial restructurings.
Corporate obligations and personal guarantees are different
The same committee memorandum recounts an August 1990 New Jersey regulatory report that put debt across Trump holdings at $3.4 billion, including $1.3 billion on casinos and $832.5 million in personally guaranteed loans. Those are distinct categories in the memorandum’s account of the regulator’s report; the personally guaranteed-loan figure is not the same as casino debt or evidence that Trump personally filed for bankruptcy.

What happened in the early-1990s restructurings?
The Taj Mahal entered bankruptcy court just over a year after opening, according to the House committee memorandum. Trump Plaza and Trump Castle followed in 1992. The memorandum describes a restructuring in which Trump ceded lenders a 50 percent stake in the businesses in exchange for lower interest rates, with some principal and interest deferred.

This property-level restructuring episode should not be conflated with the later Chapter 11 petitions filed by Trump’s casino holding company and certain subsidiaries. The available account describes negotiations over the casino businesses and their debt; it does not establish that Trump personally filed for bankruptcy.
When did a public casino company take over the portfolio?
In 1995, Trump shifted Trump Plaza into the publicly traded Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts, according to the House committee memorandum. The company later acquired the Taj Mahal and Trump Castle; the Castle was renamed Trump Marina after the public company acquired it in 1996. The SEC filing identifies Trump Entertainment Resorts as the successor to Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts.

This distinction matters: the casino properties were operated through a corporate entity, and the company’s later financial filings concern that entity and certain subsidiaries—not a personal bankruptcy petition by Trump.

2004 filing and 2005 emergence
Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts and certain subsidiaries filed voluntary Chapter 11 petitions on November 21, 2004. The bankruptcy court confirmed a reorganization plan on April 5, 2005; the plan took effect on May 20, 2005, when the company emerged under the name Trump Entertainment Resorts. These dates are documented in the company’s SEC Form 10-K and a New Jersey Casino Control Commission financial report.

2009 filing
Trump Entertainment Resorts and certain subsidiaries filed Chapter 11 on February 17, 2009, according to the filing date shown in the SEC-filed 2009 Form 10-Q and described in the House committee memorandum. That filing is a separate corporate case from the 2004 petition. The sources cited here establish the filing date, not the full outcome of the 2009 proceeding.

What did the company report in 2005?
After emerging from Chapter 11, Trump Entertainment Resorts operated the Taj Mahal, Trump Plaza and Trump Marina in Atlantic City. Its 2006 Form 10-K reported the following net revenues for the 2005 fiscal year:

The Taj Mahal closed on October 10, 2016, after management and union workers failed to reach agreement over health and pension benefits, TIME reported. That account establishes the closure and its labor-dispute context; it does not trace the full later ownership or current condition of the site. The sources cited here likewise do not establish a complete later disposition for all three properties.

Trump later characterized Atlantic City as “a very good cash cow for me for a long time,” according to the House committee memorandum’s attribution to a recent interview. The remark captures his retrospective view, but the corporate revenue and restructuring record shows why the history cannot be reduced to a single claim about either success or failure.
