Donna Kelce said she and Ed knew their marriage was not working but stayed together while raising their sons. In a 2024 interview, she described that choice as having to “stand still” for several years before she could move on on her own. She was not saying she stopped working: she also spoke about her demanding career as a commercial banker and her role as a major breadwinner.
What Donna Kelce said about staying together
Donna made the remarks in a conversation with Glamour editor-in-chief Samantha Barry, published October 3, 2024. She described the marriage and the decision to remain together this way:
“My husband and I knew that our marriage was not working, but we stayed together for the kids,” she said. “Ours was a very friendly relationship. So, we could do that and make sure that their life was normal as possible. But in that one respect, I did stand still for several years until I could move on on my own.”
Her phrase “in that one respect” matters: she was describing a personal part of her life she felt had to wait, not saying that every aspect of her life or work stopped. In the same interview, she said: “I was a commercial banker for a bank in several different states. I wanted to get ahead. I worked really, really hard. I was a major breadwinner in the family. And I think it’s important for kids to see that a woman can do whatever she wants, but I did stand still too.” Read the Glamour interview.

What “stand still” meant to her
Kelce connected the phrase to balancing motherhood, ambition and her own ability to move on. She said she worked hard and wanted to advance in banking, while also feeling that in one respect she had put her own movement on hold for several years. The interview presents this as her account of her experience—not as general advice about whether couples should stay together for their children.
What is known about the timeline
Marie Claire reported on October 4, 2024, that Donna and Ed’s marriage lasted 25 years and that they divorced after their sons, Jason and Travis, had both graduated from college. The report does not establish exact wedding or divorce dates, so a more precise timeline cannot be drawn from these accounts. Marie Claire’s report gives the broad chronology.

How the documentary fits in
The 2023 documentary Kelce provides earlier family context. In a later account, Life & Style quoted Travis Kelce recalling that he noticed his parents did not share a room and saying he believed they stayed together for his and Jason’s benefit. That is Travis’s recollection and interpretation; it is distinct from Donna’s explanation in her 2024 interview. Life & Style’s account was updated February 7, 2025.
