At a Friends of Ireland lunch on March 17, 2017, Trump recited a proverb about remembering loyal friends; the wording and its attribution prompted social-media criticism.
What Trump said at the 2017 St. Patrick’s Day event
Trump made the remark at the Friends of Ireland lunch on March 17, 2017. TIME quoted him saying: “Always remember to forget the friends that proved untrue. But never forget to remember those that have stuck by you.” TIME’s contemporaneous account reported the quote as part of its roundup of Washington’s holiday missteps.
The line was a recited proverb about loyalty. The coverage does not establish that Trump wrote it or posted it as a tweet, so “Tweet” in the search phrase should not be taken as proof that a specific tweet carried the words.
Why the proverb drew criticism
Contemporaneous coverage described social-media criticism of the wording and its use at the event. The criticism focused in part on the saying’s attribution: the remark was delivered by the president, but its authorship was disputed in the reporting. The Washington Post’s March 17 report placed the incident among that year’s St. Patrick’s Day political missteps.

What is known about the saying’s attribution
TIME reported that the State Department had supplied the proverb as a “building block” for the event. It also reported that Albasheer Adam Alhassan, a Nigerian man, said he had posted similar wording more than ten years earlier. Those accounts document a dispute over the saying; they do not establish a definitive origin for every version of it.
Is there one original Trump St. Patrick’s Day meme?
The cited contemporaneous reports establish the event, the spoken quote and the online reaction, but do not identify an originating tweet, a first meme post or a canonical meme image. Images or posts shared under this topic should therefore be treated as reactions to the episode unless their individual provenance is independently shown.
