The controversy involved Biel, then known for playing Collins’s daughter on 7th Heaven, and the March 2000 issue of the magazine.
What was the photoshoot?
Biel appeared in a spread for Gear magazine’s March 2000 issue while she was associated with 7th Heaven, the family drama in which she played Mary Camden and Collins played her father. The shoot became a flashpoint in discussion of her public image. The original issue was not reviewed for this account, and the images are not reproduced here.
Accounts differ on Biel’s age depending on whether they refer to the shoot or the issue’s publication. The E! retrospective and later coverage describe her as 17 when photographed. A Washington Post report published February 8, 2000 described her as 18 in connection with the upcoming issue. Those descriptions should not be collapsed into a single unqualified age.
What did Stephen Collins reportedly say?
E! later reported that Collins criticized the spread in an interview with the New York Daily News and called it “child pornography.” Vogue also recounts that characterization. The original Daily News interview was not available for review here, so the phrase is best understood as wording attributed to Collins by subsequent reports—not as a verified transcript.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
“Disturbed” is a headline characterization, not wording established as Collins’s direct quote in these accounts. The documented description is his reported criticism of the spread.
How did Biel later describe the shoot?
Vogue reports that Biel later recalled the experience as embarrassing: “I did this photo shoot; the photo shoot came out; it was terribly embarrassing.” That is her retrospective account of how she felt about the shoot, distinct from Collins’s reported criticism and from other people’s interpretations of her reasons for doing it.

Did the photoshoot cause Biel to leave 7th Heaven?
A contemporaneous University of Delaware student newspaper archive reports that Biel said in the Gear interview that she planned to leave the show. That report establishes that she discussed leaving; it does not establish that the photoshoot caused her departure. The available evidence does not support treating the two as a proven cause-and-effect story.
Collins’s later admission of separate sexual misconduct involving minors was reported by ABC News in 2014, based on an interview with Katie Couric. That was a distinct later development, not part of the 2000 dispute over Biel’s magazine spread.
