Baldur’s Gate 3 is designed around player agency that reaches beyond dialogue: character identity, party relationships, exploration, and turn-based combat all connect to the larger story. Larian Studios presents it as a player-driven role-playing game set in Dungeons & Dragons’ Forgotten Realms. That is the studio’s description of its aims; it is not an independent measure of how much agency players experience.
How does Baldur’s Gate 3 handle choices?
Larian’s official feature page frames the story around a parasite, bonds among party members, and decisions that affect the fate of the Forgotten Realms. It says choices can leave marks on the world and shape a character’s story and legacy. The design implication is broader than a dialogue tree: decisions are presented as touching relationships, enemies, exploration, and the state of the world.

Character identity is part of that structure. Larian describes seven Origin heroes, each with an authored story that intersects with the main plot. A player can embody an Origin character or recruit one into the party; the characters’ stories can reach different outcomes. This makes the party more than a collection of interchangeable combat roles: who the player is and whom they travel with are both positioned as narrative choices.
That does not mean every decision has an equally large or permanent consequence. The official descriptions establish an intention to make the story reactive, but do not quantify branching outcomes or show that every choice changes the world to the same degree.

How does the game let players solve problems?
Spaces offer more than a route from one fight to the next
Larian highlights sneaking, climbing, jumping, shoving, and dipping as actions players can use in the world. These physical verbs make space itself part of the problem: a player can consider position, access, and movement rather than treating every obstacle as a dialogue prompt or an enemy to attack.
Exploration and combat share environmental affordances
The feature page also calls out verticality and environmental interactions during combat. That links exploration to tactical play: the same attention to surroundings that helps a player move through a location can matter when a turn-based encounter begins. The official material names these possibilities but does not count how many encounters support each approach, so it cannot establish how often any one tactic is viable.
What makes Baldur’s Gate 3’s combat different?
The game uses turn-based combat based on Dungeons & Dragons fifth-edition rules, but presents those rules through a videogame system Larian describes as evolved for play on screen. The studio’s feature page names team-based initiative, advantage and disadvantage, roll modifiers, AI, environmental interaction, and difficulty options as parts of that system.
Team-based initiative is a notable design choice in the official description: combat is framed around the group’s turns rather than simply listing individual characters in isolation. Alongside environmental interactions and roll modifiers, this positions encounters as a combination of rules-based decisions and responses to the surroundings. The available official materials confirm the 5e basis and identify selected mechanics; they do not provide a complete feature-by-feature comparison with tabletop D&D.
Difficulty changes the intended level of pressure
Larian lists three stated difficulty settings through Tactician. This creates a way to choose a different challenge level, but the feature page does not establish the exact mechanical differences between settings. It is therefore safer to treat difficulty as a broad choice about pressure than to infer particular enemy, resource, or rules adjustments from the names alone.
How do Origin characters and multiplayer shape the party?
Origin characters work in two roles: they are authored protagonists with their own stories, and they can also become party members when the player chooses another character to embody. Larian says their narratives intersect with the larger plot and can end in different ways. This arrangement lets character selection and recruitment influence whose perspective is central without making the rest of the party narratively irrelevant.

The official feature page says online multiplayer supports up to four players. Participants can coordinate in combat or split up to pursue separate quests and agendas. Those options create a useful contrast between cooperation and divergence: the party can act as a coordinated unit, or its members can follow different immediate goals. The page describes what multiplayer permits, not how commonly players choose either style.
How did Larian develop and revise the design?
According to Larian’s support FAQ, a small team began work on the story and game design in late 2016, and the studio received the official go-ahead from Wizards of the Coast in January 2017. The FAQ identifies Divinity 4.0 as the game’s engine. These are development details reported by the studio.

The studio also said it gathered reactions through press presentations, live events, and community feedback. This documents iteration during development; it does not show that any particular feature changed because of one specific response.

The Game Developers Conference catalog lists Larian Studios’ Swen Vincke as the speaker for a 2024 Design session titled “The Secrets of ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’.” Its catalog overview says the session covers development and market challenges. The listing establishes the session and its stated scope, but not particular arguments or quotes from it.

The counts communicate the breadth Larian advertises, but they do not by themselves measure how balanced, distinct, or consequential each option is in play.
What the design adds up to
The official materials describe a connected set of systems rather than a story layer sitting above a separate combat game. Choices are framed as affecting relationships and the world; Origin characters tie personal stories to party membership; exploration supplies physical actions and vertical routes; combat adapts 5e-derived rules to turn-based encounters with environmental interaction. Multiplayer extends that agency to a group of up to four, with the option to coordinate or split up.
The most defensible conclusion is about design intent: Larian presents Baldur’s Gate 3 as a game in which player decisions can operate across narrative, party, space, and combat. The official feature descriptions explain those intended connections, while leaving their frequency and impact in individual playthroughs unmeasured.
