The partnership is more than a character-skin deal—but the broad, persistent universe announced in 2024 is still an ambition, not a single finished product. By October 2026, the clearest evidence is a collection of Fortnite experiences and creator tools, plus a new link between a Fortnite island and the Smugglers Run theme-park attraction.
What Disney and Epic announced
On February 7, 2024, The Walt Disney Company and Epic Games announced a multiyear collaboration to build an open, persistent and social games-and-entertainment universe that would interoperate with Fortnite. The companies described a place to play, watch, shop, engage with stories and characters, and create and share user experiences. The franchises named included Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar, with Unreal Engine set to power the project.
Disney also announced a $1.5 billion investment for an equity stake in Epic Games, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. That announcement does not establish the deal’s final ownership percentage or confirm its closing. Nor does it specify a launch date, final feature set or commercial model for the proposed universe; Disney described those future products and services as forward-looking.
“Metaverse” is a useful shorthand for the scale of the idea, but it was not the companies’ formal product name. Their own language—an “open, persistent and social universe” and a “persistent, open and interoperable ecosystem”—points to the concrete test: can people move among connected entertainment, play and creation experiences, rather than simply encounter Disney characters inside a game?

What has taken shape in Fortnite
The evidence through October 2026 is a sequence of specific experiences and tools, not confirmation that every part of the 2024 vision is available. The distinction matters: a playable island, an approved creator toolkit and a persistent cross-media universe are related, but they are not the same thing.

Disney’s own reported figures show the scale it sees in Fortnite as a storytelling platform, but they should be read as company-reported historical metrics, not independent measures of current audience or proof that the larger universe is complete. In its 2024 announcement, Disney cited more than 15.3 million concurrent players at Fortnite’s Marvel Nexus War with Galactus event and more than 3 billion video-game players worldwide. In 2026, it reported that more than 80 million players spent 780 million hours in the Fortnite Simpsons season in fall 2025, and that custom Star Wars islands drew nearly 8 million players in their first 72 hours after the official toolkit launch. Those figures describe different events and periods; they are not a current Fortnite player count.
How Smugglers Gambit connects a park visit to Fortnite
The Smugglers Gambit connection is the partnership’s most tangible example of participation crossing between a physical Disney experience and Fortnite. Disney says guests collect crates during the Smugglers Run attraction and can unlock Fortnite rewards. The attraction requires valid park admission, so the park-linked part is not available to someone who only downloads Fortnite.
Eligible guests can link their MyDisney and Epic accounts to receive post-ride rewards. Disney says guests who cannot link accounts can instead redeem a code in Fortnite. Fortnite itself is free to download on PC, console and mobile, according to Disney; that does not remove the park-admission requirement for the attraction-based reward.

As of October 2026, Fortnite’s official Disney hub also promotes Smugglers Gambit and other Star Wars games, and describes an eligible-account-linking offer for a free Carbonite Fishstick Backbling through October 31, 2026. The offer is date-limited, and eligibility and availability should be checked on the official hub before relying on it.

The announced ambition and the experiences available so far differ in scope. The 2024 plan encompassed watching, shopping, engaging with multiple Disney franchises, and making and sharing user experiences in an open, persistent environment. The later examples establish narrower pieces: islands with specific entertainment, creator tools tied to approved intellectual property, and a park-linked digital reward.

The strongest interpretation is therefore neither “just a branded event” nor “a completed Disney metaverse.” Fortnite is functioning as a connection point through which Disney can stage experiences, invite creators to build with approved assets and, in one case, tie a real-world attraction to an in-game reward. Whether those pieces grow into the broader persistent ecosystem is a separate question from whether the partnership has produced useful experiences already.
What to watch next
- Creator participation: whether official toolkits lead to a continuing range of creator-made experiences, rather than a small set of launch islands.
- Continuity across experiences: whether people can carry meaningful participation between islands, franchise experiences and other parts of the proposed ecosystem, beyond isolated rewards.
- Access beyond the park: whether physical-to-digital links remain occasional promotions or become a recurring part of how Disney experiences connect to Fortnite.
- Scope of the universe: whether future announcements fill in the announced play, watch, shop and social features, with clear availability and timing.
Robert A. Iger called the 2024 deal Disney’s “biggest entry ever into the world of games,” while Epic CEO Tim Sweeney described an effort to bring Disney and Fortnite communities together in an interoperable ecosystem. The 2026 examples make that strategy easier to see in practice, but they do not establish its eventual scale, commercial success or completion.
