Sometimes AEW’s wrestling uses blood to make a feud feel more consequential, but the available evidence does not show how often it happens across the company’s schedule—or establish that AEW relies on it more than other promotions. Whether it feels like too much is therefore partly a matter of taste: blood can support a story for one viewer and feel gratuitous or off-putting to another.
Why AEW uses blood—and why some viewers object
Blood can make a wrestling match seem more physically costly, underline a rivalry, or signal that the stakes have changed. Wrestlers who defend its use tend to describe it as a storytelling tool, not an end in itself. But that defense does not mean every bloody match serves its story well.
Criticism usually turns on whether violence is too frequent or too intense: it may distract from the wrestling, lose its impact through repetition, or put off viewers who prefer less graphic matches. A 2024 commentary article discusses both especially violent moments and the context that can shape them; it is an example of the debate, not evidence of how representative either side is. Last Word on Pro Wrestling, October 15, 2024.
Jon Moxley’s position illustrates the distinction between using blood and pursuing extreme gore. In a 2023 interview excerpt reported by PWMania, he said, “I’m actually for less blood but more often.” That is a performer’s view, not a measure of audience opinion or proof that blood is effective in every match. PWMania, July 2023.

Jamie Hayter also described blood as something that can raise a match’s stakes when it is used at the right time. Her comment, reported in a 2026 interview, reflects her perspective as a wrestler rather than a general audience verdict. Yahoo Sports, 2026.
How to decide whether it is excessive
Frequency
A memorable bloody match can make a promotion’s style seem more violent than its programming is overall. The sources available here do not provide a systematic count of blood across AEW matches, episodes, or years, nor a reliable comparison with other promotions. So it is not possible to establish from them how often AEW uses blood or whether it does so more than its peers.

Purpose in the story
Ask whether the violence changes the rivalry, communicates a character’s desperation, or makes a match’s stakes clearer. If it does, viewers may see it as earned. If it seems interchangeable with any other dramatic moment—or added mainly for shock—it may feel unnecessary. The same scene can land differently for different viewers.
Intensity and presentation
A brief bloody moment is not the same as sustained, graphic gore. Moxley’s comments make that distinction; the 2024 criticism also addresses intensity as part of the disagreement. Viewers who object to graphic presentation may find it excessive even when it has a clear story purpose.

Audience fit
AEW says its mission includes providing a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment at live events. That statement describes the event environment; it does not set out a broadcast blood policy or establish what all viewers think about graphic matches. AEW’s official overview.
What AEW’s public comments establish—and what they do not
AEW’s public framing has included hard-hitting action, but comments about it should be kept in context. In July 2025, Tony Khan was reported as saying TNT and TBS had supported hard-hitting action and brutal fights in AEW. The report is a secondary transcription of an interview; it does not establish a specific current network rule about blood. Fightful, July 30, 2025.

So, does AEW rely too much on blood and gore?
The evidence supports a qualified answer: blood is an intentional part of AEW’s presentation in some high-stakes stories, and reasonable viewers can disagree about whether particular uses go too far. It does not support a firm claim that blood is frequent across the full schedule, more common than in other promotions, or necessary to AEW’s success. The clearest way to judge a match is to consider how often the violence appears to you, how graphic it is, and whether it meaningfully serves the story.
