Did Disney’s Snow White Really Surge at the Box Office?

Snow White’s UK and Ireland opening was strong, but that regional chart win was not a sustained worldwide surge. Here’s what the box office and changing Rotten Tomatoes scores show.

Disney’s Snow White had a strong opening in the UK and Ireland, where it topped the chart with £3.85 million over March 21–23, 2025. That regional result is not evidence of a sustained worldwide surge: the North American opening came in below expectations, the film dropped sharply in its second weekend, and its final worldwide theatrical gross was about $205.7 million. Its 40% Rotten Tomatoes figure is also a dated snapshot, not the score shown on the site when accessed October 8, 2026.

What “surge” means in this case

The headline’s strongest evidence is a three-day opening in one market, not a long-term or worldwide trend. Disney’s UK press release said the film opened at number one in the UK and Ireland on March 21–23, 2025, taking £3.85 million and 43% of ticket sales. Those figures support a chart-topping regional launch; they do not establish that the film continued to surge after opening weekend.

Different measures tell different parts of the story: chart rank and ticket-sales share describe the UK and Ireland opening; weekend gross describes North American and global launches; the second-weekend change indicates momentum; and a lifetime gross records the theatrical run as a whole.

Opening weekend: strong regionally, below expectations in North America

UK and Ireland

Disney reported that Snow White led the UK and Ireland chart with £3.85 million and 43% of ticket sales across March 21–23, 2025. The same Disney release attributed audience findings to comScore: four stars across audience demographics, with a Total Positive score of 88% among children and 94% among girls. These are Disney-reported figures attributed to comScore, rather than independent box-office measures.

North America and the global launch

The Associated Press reported studio estimates of a $43 million North American opening and a $44.3 million overseas opening, for an $87.3 million global launch. The North American result was below tracking expectations of $50 million or more described by Rotten Tomatoes Editorial. A strong UK and Ireland chart position and a lower-than-expected North American opening can both be true: they cover different territories and benchmarks.

The second weekend and the completed theatrical run

Momentum fell after the opening

In its second North American weekend, the film’s box office fell 66%, according to the Associated Press. AP also reported a $143.1 million global total after two weeks. That decline is why the opening-weekend headline should not be read as proof of a sustained surge.

Lifetime gross

The Numbers database lists the final worldwide theatrical gross as $205,679,463: $87,203,963 domestic and $118,475,500 international. These are database-reported totals, not a measure of profitability. A theatrical gross alone does not establish a film’s profit because the available figures do not account for distribution, marketing, or exhibitor costs.

What happened to the “40% RT score”?

The 40% in the headline reflects a point-in-time Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score. On the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page, accessed October 8, 2026, the Tomatometer showed 39% from 277 reviews, while the Popcornmeter showed 69% from more than 2,500 verified ratings. Rotten Tomatoes scores can change as reviews and ratings are added, so neither the headline’s 40% nor the later 39% should be treated as a permanent score.

The two ratings also measure different audiences: the Tomatometer aggregates critics’ reviews, while the Popcornmeter reflects verified audience ratings. Neither rating by itself explains how many people bought tickets or why the film performed as it did.

Controversy was part of the conversation, not a proven box-office cause

Before release, reporting described debate over the film’s CGI depiction of the dwarfs and backlash over Rachel Zegler’s comments. The Associated Press also reported that Disney pulled back on its premiere. That context helps explain why the release attracted attention, but the cited reporting does not isolate the effect of controversy on ticket sales. It is therefore more accurate to say the film opened and played amid controversy than to claim the controversy caused its opening result or later decline.

Disney describes the film as “a live-action musical reimagining of the classic 1937 film” on its official film page, which lists a March 21, 2025 release date.

When was it available for home viewing?

The Numbers lists May 13, 2025 as the video release date for Walt Disney Home Entertainment. That date establishes a home-video release, but it does not confirm the availability of a particular edition or current retailer listing.
