The Disney–DIRECTV blackout that interrupted ESPN and ABC ended on September 14, 2024. The companies announced an agreement in principle and said Disney’s full linear channel lineup had been restored to DIRECTV satellite, DIRECTV STREAM and U-verse customers. DIRECTV’s current network listings include ABC and ESPN, so the headline’s warning is not a description of a current blackout.
What happened in the Disney–DIRECTV dispute?
The disagreement was about carriage and distribution: whether and on what terms DIRECTV would carry Disney’s networks and programming. The affected lineup included sports as well as entertainment and news, among them ESPN networks, ABC, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX and National Geographic.
- September 1, 2024: Disney and ESPN issued a statement about the dispute and subscribers’ loss of access to their programming.
- September 4, 2024: Disney executives publicly argued for a more flexible marketplace agreement and described package options Disney said it had proposed. That was Disney’s account of the negotiations, not a jointly established account.
- September 14, 2024: Disney and DIRECTV announced an agreement in principle. They said the full linear portfolio was restored to DIRECTV satellite, DIRECTV STREAM and U-verse customers while they worked to finalize a multi-year contract. The blackout had lasted about two weeks, according to the Associated Press.
In the joint announcement, the companies said: “Through this first-of-its-kind collaboration, DIRECTV and Disney are giving customers the ability to tailor their video experience through more flexible options.”
What did the announced agreement include?
The September 14 announcement described the following terms and options. It was an announcement of an agreement in principle, not a complete public account of the final executed contract.

Can DIRECTV subscribers watch ABC and ESPN now?
DIRECTV’s current public network information lists ABC and ESPN. Network availability can depend on the service, package and location, so subscribers should check the lineup for their own address and plan rather than assume every channel is included in every product.
Linear channel access and streaming-app access are separate ways to watch. DIRECTV’s streaming-app information describes access to Disney+, Hulu and ESPN services, with availability dependent on the package; some access through DIRECTV’s interface requires a Gemini device. A channel listing does not establish that a particular upcoming game will air on ABC or ESPN, or that a streaming service carries every event viewers associate with ESPN. Check the event’s rights holder and current schedule before choosing a service.

What streaming inclusions does DIRECTV advertise?
In a September 9, 2026 article, DIRECTV Insider Staff said that eligible DIRECTV Signature Package customers with a Gemini device receive the Disney+, Hulu Bundle with ads and ESPN Unlimited included with their subscription. DIRECTV’s wording was: “As a DIRECTV Signature Package customer with a Gemini device, you receive the Disney+, Hulu Bundle (with ads) and ESPN Unlimited included with your subscription – ON US!” This applies to the eligible streaming customers and terms described by DIRECTV; it should not be read as an offer for every DIRECTV household or every DIRECTV product.
DIRECTV’s published figure that more than 90% of its households watched Disney linear programming every month in 2023 was attributed by Disney to Nielsen in Disney’s September 4, 2024 dispute statement. It is Disney’s cited figure, not an independently verified Nielsen finding in that statement.

What is still unclear about the contract?
The public September 2024 announcement said the parties would finalize a multi-year contract, but the reviewed public information does not disclose the final executed contract’s exact duration or its detailed, service-by-service conditions. Current network listings and a later streaming offer establish what DIRECTV publicly lists or advertises; they do not reveal all of the contract’s terms.
For practical decisions, verify DIRECTV’s current package lineup and offer terms for your location, equipment and service type. Also check where a specific game is being broadcast: access to ESPN, ABC or a streaming app alone does not guarantee that it carries the event you want.
